About Sunrise at Bay Village

Sunrise at Bay Village is a senior living community in Annapolis, Maryland, located just moments from the Chesapeake Bay. Situated on three wooded acres, the community offers a setting that is both peaceful and convenient, with easy access to downtown Annapolis and nearby shopping, dining, and grocery options.

The community offers assisted living and memory care, organized into neighborhoods that provide tailored services and support based on individual needs. Assisted living residents receive support with daily needs such as dressing, bathing, and medication management, while residents living with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other forms of memory loss receive specialized, compassionate care. Respite stays are also available, offering short-term accommodations for caregivers needing a break or for seniors recovering from surgery or other circumstances.

Before move-in, a nurse meets with prospective residents to assess individual healthcare needs and determine an appropriate, personalized care level. Senior apartments are available in a variety of floor plans, and the community can accommodate couples who wish to share a private suite.

Dining is prepared by an on-site culinary team using fresh, quality ingredients, with menus crafted around residents' personal tastes and preferences. Special dietary needs can be accommodated, including diabetic diet plans, pureed foods, fortified diets, and low-sodium diets. A bistro area offers snacks such as popcorn, cookies, and fresh fruit, and serves as a gathering spot for socializing.

Residents can take part in a range of social events, engaging activities, and group fitness classes, along with programs such as movies after dinner, bingo, musical guests, and a weekly virtual church service. An activities room includes amenities like a pool table and puzzles, and the community also offers volunteer opportunities for those interested in giving back.

I wouldn't recommend sending family members here. At the beginning it started out with billing issues (not being contacted and not being responded to). Then my grandfather did not receive adequate care (was allowed to walk the facility in heavily soiled clothing for multiple weeks without any notification to family (it was requested that the facility would notify family if he declined any of his showers). This was only discovered once I visited him. Then after a hospital stay, the ED and care coordinator stated they required him to be sent to an outpatient treatment facility for further treatment and evaluation (this was not in line with doctor's recommendations) and we moved him to another facility. Do not send your loved ones here !

I agree with other reviewers that Janine is an amazing asset to the community and hires a great team to work alongside her. They often go above and beyond and are extremely pleasant. Mariah looks out for my grandfather and it's nice to feel he is in trusted hands on her roster. Michelly is super impressive and caring as an activities director!!

The main assisted living halls and area are a warm and great place to be. The seniors enjoy the music and theme days and decorations. They have movies after dinner each night and keep the popcorn machine running. Regular bingo and "basketball," weekly virtual church service in the theater and musical guests and more. They have an activities room equipped with a pool table and more puzzles than I could ever solve. The property is beautiful with room to expand I think. It is convenient that there is a CVS and Starbucks right in the "shopping center" and a grocery and bar/restaurants nearby. Very convenient to downtown Annapolis and the mall and more.

I don't have much experience with memory care units to compare it to, but I do feel like that section can feel a little sad or neglected at times - I don't know if it's the layout or just it is what it is. I think all of the nursing staff in an assisted living might be overextended, but particularly in memory care I think it can be an exhausting and thankless job and that Sunrise needs to invest to greatly exceed any compliance ratios. Families with means to hire additional care to come in for the day like from 10-3 with their loved one should consider it. It makes all the difference. I would love to see Sunrise use its property to revitalize their memory care and become a frontrunner in investing in this side of the business.

I would also agree that cutting a second shift nursing staff is not a good move in terms of care for our loved ones. I can only imagine the discussions and dilemmas that go into these decisions and do not want any critical feedback to fall down on the ones doing the hard job of taking care of them. My criticisms are for corporate. The staff of the place is making them look great and could not be doing a better job with what they have to work with truly. It is amazing and I'm sincerely so grateful to them and would like to see corporate make their lives easier and better so they can do the great work more fully. You've got to spend money to make money!

Going into an assisted living process is so scary and I am so grateful for where we ended up via A Place for Mom - as one reviewer said you will definitely be fine here :) And I hope sunrise will invest in areas for growth such as paying meaningful competitive salary and overstaffing to avoid backlash from turnover. You can never have too much staff and there is always too much burnout. I implore you to take care of those who are taking care of our loved ones and that is the only real reason for only giving four stars instead of five. I feel the memory care unit could be improved with more staffing able to really give the residents and that community even more TLC and because I feel the whole place deserves more staffing or staff investment because they do a great job and just need to be less stretched thin in my view.

And to be clear: the staff NEVER complain and are always responsive and have great attitudes. I count myself attuned enough to make this push on my own see when places may be short handed. So please PLEASE actually make investment and don't just put pressure on the directors or managers to make it look more put together while trying to cut their budget or corners - put it together more and make progress happen and don't put lipstick on a pig so to speak...

AGAIN - so happy with the people that make this place shine and grateful my grandfather is in a good spot and that I feel welcome and proud to visit him here. I very much love this community and am grateful our family is a part of it and happy to answer any questions prospective families have and to keep it real :)

My parents have been at Bay Village for nearly 4 years and have been well cared for. I can't speak highly enough of Janine, who not only does a fabulous job in her role managing the entire facility, but also puts on her "nurse" hat as needed to ensure that residents receive the best care possible. She is always available to answer any questions families and residents have. Under her leadership, Bay Village continues to thrive. My parents love all the social activities, and the facility itself is clean, bright, and lovely.
