I recently had the chance to bring some of our parrots to Autumn Care in Madison for the residents, and I really enjoyed the experience.

What stood out to me most was how involved everyone was. The residents were encouraged to come up, interact with the birds, and enjoy them without being made to feel like they were too fragile or couldn’t be trusted around them. I’ve been in other facilities where that wasn’t always the case, so I really appreciated seeing that difference.

The staff were just as involved. They helped residents get closer to the birds, helped when there were communication barriers, and made sure people could participate however they were able. They even let me bring the birds into the rooms of residents who couldn’t get out of bed or just didn’t feel like coming out that day, which I thought was really thoughtful.

I also noticed there were snacks, coloring books, crafts, and other things available for the residents. It didn’t feel cold or overly clinical. It honestly felt more like a place someone could enjoy being, rather than a place they simply had to be.

We’d be honored to come back and spend time with everyone again. The birds loved the attention too, and I think they enjoyed the visit every bit as much as we did.
