Before my loved one moved in, we were very upfront about his resistance to care and combativeness. Staff repeatedly assured us they were skilled at redirection, and that if needed, they could arrange an inpatient stay at Levindale for medication adjustment. Neither of those promises held up.
When redirection failed, the response was increased medication. When I raised concerns about obvious side effects — significantly increased confusion and falling — I was told "we need something for the behavior" and that the decline was probably disease progression. The medications never helped the behavior. They accelerated the disease. The psych doctor was told staff was afraid of my loved one, and they asked him not to reduce the dosage. When I asked about the Levindale option, I was told "it's not that easy to arrange."
The intake forms are detailed on food preferences. None of it was followed. The forms asked if he likes coffee with breakfast lunch or dinner, but then there is never any coffee with any meals at all.
We had a camera in the room. The footage showed gaps of up to 8 hours with no one opening his door, 12+ hour gaps between brief changes, and — most seriously — after one fall he lay on the floor calling for help for 90 minutes. Staff assumed he was hallucinating and never opened the door to check.
Tellingly, once hospice became involved and was also seeing him regularly, the frequency of Arden Courts checks, bathing, changing, and room cleaning improved noticeably.
To be fair: some individual staff members were exceptional — patient, skilled, and genuinely effective with him. He wasn't combative with them. Arden Courts Towson just didn't have enough of those people.
This may be a good placement for someone cooperative and easily redirected. I don't feel like it was a good place for my loved one.

My spouse has adapted well and is generally comfortable. My main complaint is with the meals. I would like to see more fresh salads and fruits in place of canned ones. A roll and butter now and then would also be nice. Activities are good and varied in nature. Generally speaking, the care here is sufficient.

I moved my father to Arden Courts two months ago from a nearby assisted living community, and I've been pleasantly surprised. He acclimated beautifully and really enjoys the outdoor space for walks and fresh air. The smaller setting has helped ease his anxiety and he seems relaxed and at home most of the time. Everyone on the staff knows his name and treats him with dignity.

Update: my dad spent the last 15 months of his life at Arden Courts and it was the right place for him to be. He enjoyed the space, people, and care. The staff was so caring in his final weeks and the nursing team worked well coordinating hospice, etc. As a family member, I always felt welcomed there. The Executive Director, Anne, is a great communicator and advocate. I always felt heard by the entire team.

My father has very advanced dementia and is 98. We finally felt we could not safely keep him at home without risk of injury. We have found Arden Courts to be caring and respectful. The Administrator is there alot and easily reached. She has been very responsive to any of our concerns. I cant address the activity programs as he is often too tired to participate but everyone knows him by name and they are very friendly. My father always loved the outdoors and the beautiful walking paths were a real plus in our eyes. The decision to let someone else care for a loved one is very difficult and there is a transition period when letting go of every aspect of their care is necessary. I felt we were nursed along that process well. I would recommend them whole-heartily.
