Duffy A. Steamboat Springs, CO 010 Oct 7, 2026 My mom's experience at Alta Vita Memory Care was the second memory care we tried. She is my third family member to experience dementia, so I have a little background in how things go in memory care. Alta Vita left we with real concerns after just a short while, and they only continued and accelerated as her disease progressed and as I tried to work with the administration and staff. I brought in the ombudsman on a couple issues, and eventually moved her to a different facility when I felt that her needs (which are by no means outside the norm for an octogenarian with memory issues) would not be met. Let me also so that I understand that caregiving in memory care can be stressful if carers are not supported. I generally found the carers to be reasonable and kind people, so I have to look upward to see how the administration, the facility director and the wellness director, were managing things. What I met from them again and again was a wall of "she refused." She refused to shower, she refused to change clothes, she refused to take her shoes off before bed, etc. That was the end of the story. I would arrive to find her wearing not just too many layers of shirts(3-4) and pants(2-3), but also bras(2) and underpants (3). I was asked to just remove more of her clothing from her room so she couldn't do that. If I asked about having someone help her, "she refused." I eventually hired a private carer to shower her and help her dress. I want to point out also that the feedback I received from managers was that she was doing great and participating. Yes, she went to activities, but she was often asleep in the chair there. My mom was and continues to be active and interested, but when seated in a chair in a darkened room (the facility is not bright and light), she would fall asleep. I was concerned about care even further after I pointed out the four pairs of underwear drying in her room. the whole room smelled of urine, and clearly, they weren't all created in one morning. I found that she was not being given certain of her over the counter meds (I couldn't track the prescription meds quite as closely) to the extent that there were several full bottles returned to me when I moved her out. The care reports claimed that she had been given them. I could go on, but the theme is that what is happening day to day there is not what I was paying for, and the director(s) were consistently willing to gloss them over and gaslight me. Is this the worst memory care center in the area? Likely not. But if you have a loved one there, be prepared to spend a lot of time and energy making sure they get what they need

What can I say about such a wonderful facility? From the care staff to the dining staff to the housekeepers. Everyone is here because they truly care about caring for others and strive to do their best work for their residents. Very attentive and hard working!

Alta Vita was Mom's first experience with life in memory care. She's now in a different state in her fifth care home and I find myself wanting to provide some info for those in the stage I was in 2 years ago. Things could be different now but here was our experience:<br><br>Dad would visit twice a week and the visits were pleasant. In fact, of the five memory care homes mom has lived in, Alta Vita had the best activity schedule. She was able to talk more those days and let me know that highlights were going to a restaurant on a field trip, being acknowledged at an oldies singalong, and getting a temporary flower tattoo on her arm. Apparently Mom would carry her activity card around with her everywhere, proud to always get to "class' on time.<br><br>Dad tried the food and experienced it as being mushy and bland. The fact that they always served dessert with dinner meant that mom might likely not make it past dessert.<br><br>The care was not so great. Dad once arrived for a visit and found her down on the bathroom floor, and did not know for how long she had been there. She went in with a rash under her breast and it was worse when she left 4 months later. Other care homes have been able to manage the rash. I arrived to bring her to my state - and found her cowering on the bed, afraid of who was coming in because two men - also residents of memory care - liked to each come in and stare. It happened while I was there helping her pack. There were brown stains on the bed sheet on her bed. I asked the staff to leave the laundry for me and everything was soaked with urine. She got Covid while she was there (2023) and was out and about mingling with people with no mask because it was too hard for the caregivers to manage. The only reason they even checked her for Covid was at my insistence when on the phone she was speaking in word salad, coughing a lot, and the caregiver who helped with the phone mentioned to me that someone in a different "neighborhood" had Covid.<br><br>Finding good memory care is really difficult. Some of it has to do with the match between the stage your loved one is at and the understanding of the care staff. I would say Alta Vita is OK for mild stage of dementia, and might be great for assisted living. I would not be able to recommend it for the later stages unless the care standards have changed considerably. Also, if you choose Alta Vita and need to later move your loved one, make sure to be present and help take charge in the assessment process of the new care home. That process did not go smoothly for us and created friction in the move.
