Through the VA Hospital Respite program We placed my mother at Walter Reed Post Acute for short-term respite care on two occasions. Our first experience, under the previous ownership, was positive. Unfortunately, our second experience under the new ownership was deeply concerning.<br><br>Prior to admission, my mother had a small sacral wound that was healing and was evaluated by her home health team, VA physician, and VA nurse. She met all medical requirements necessary for VA-approved respite care. During her 18 days at Walter Reed Post Acute stay, we were informed via staff that the wound had progressed from a minor treatable condition to a Stage 2, then Stage 3, and ultimately a Stage 4 pressure injury. In all the years she has been under our care, she had never experienced a wound progression of this severity. Leaving a patient in soiled Incontinence briefs for hours at a time because you are understaffed, they are sleep or you simply don’t care is unacceptable. Allegedly telling staff if the patient is sleeping don’t worry about waking them up for feedings or anything else because other patients who are awake need help.<br><br>Upon her discharge from Walter Reed the new extensive skin breakdown and newly developed wounds that were not properly covered. She required emergency hospitalization at Sentara. She remained hospitalized for over a month, during which physicians discussed palliative and hospice care due to the seriousness of her condition. Ultimately, a surgeon performed an extensive debridement procedure to treat the Stage 4 wound.<br><br>I encourage families considering this facility to thoroughly research and assess whether it can provide the level of care their loved one requires. Our experience during this second stay was significantly different from our first and resulted in serious concerns regarding the quality of care provided. They WILL NOT receive proper Woundcare while there. This review reflects our personal experience and is shared in the hope that other families will make informed decisions when selecting respite or skilled nursing care for their loved ones.
