This place horrible and very weird and also very nasty and dirty. This place so heavy of urine it hits you right when you walk in the front door. Residents physically and emotionally abuse their aides there. Residents defecate on the floor because their toilets doesn't work. Also they allow residents' homeless partner to live on premises and their rooms.

BEWARE of Thornton Care Center. Our family’s experience during Kayla’s stay was heartbreaking and deeply disappointing. Before Kayla was admitted, we toured the facility and everything appeared appropriate for her care needs. Staff also evaluated her at the hospital beforehand to determine whether they could properly handle and support her medical needs. We were specifically told they had cared for younger patients in the past and that handling Kayla’s needs would not be an issue, which gave our family reassurance and trust in the facility. When Kayla was admitted, she was unable to communicate for herself, so our family had to rely completely on the staff for her care and wellbeing. Again, we were reassured this would not be a problem and were told staff would consistently assist and monitor her throughout the day and night. Kayla was only 28 years old, and we felt as though many of her basic care needs were not being properly addressed. She was only there for 11 days, yet during that short amount of time we watched her condition rapidly decline. Our family experienced what we believed was a serious lack of communication, attention, compassion, and support during a time when she was extremely vulnerable. We reached out to the facility multiple times with concerns and questions. Many times we were sent to voicemail, placed on long holds, or told someone would call us back, but we often did not receive follow-up communication. This left our family feeling frustrated, helpless, and without clear answers about her condition and care. Every time we visited, we left deeply concerned. In our opinion, her hygiene and daily care did not appear to be properly maintained. By the 7th day of her stay, Kayla still had not received a shower or bed bath. My daughter requested staff assistance to help Kayla shower and was told it would be a few hours. After waiting and continuing to ask for help, my daughter eventually had to demand assistance from staff, and she ultimately had to get into the shower herself to help Kayla bathe. As a family, we found this extremely upsetting and concerning. We were also concerned about whether she was eating and being monitored appropriately. Kayla was also placed on an air bed intended to help with bed sores. However, when my son would check on her, the bed was completely flat. When he brought this to the staff’s attention and asked for help getting it aired back up, he was told he “didn’t know what he was talking about” and that they would take care of it. In our experience, the issue was not addressed in a timely manner, and she appeared to be laying against the hard bed frame rails for more than a day and a half, which was extremely upsetting for our family to witness. During her stay, Kayla’s condition worsened significantly. She later developed a blood clot in one lung, pneumonia in the other lung, severe infections, and a fever over 105 degrees. My son waited approximately 5 hours for an ambulance to transport her back to the hospital. By the time she was transported, she was crying out in pain and distress. Watching someone you love suffer while feeling powerless is something no family should ever have to experience. After returning to the hospital, Kayla remained there for a few days before being transported to hospice care. She sadly passed away 7 days later at only 28 years old, leaving behind a husband and a 9-year-old daughter. Our family will always carry the heartbreak of this loss and the difficult memories surrounding her stay there. To make matters even more upsetting for our family, after Kayla passed away, her husband received a bill for more than $4,400 despite her already being approved for Medicaid. Attempts to get answers regarding billing concerns have also been extremely frustrating. Calls to both the front desk and billing department have often gone unanswered or unreturned, leaving our family without clarification or support.

The staff is amazing and very attentive. They're very quick to alert family members of what's going on with the patients. Even though the building isn't very aesthetically pleasing the staff is amazing!

Since phasing out agency staff over a year ago, the consistency and quality of care has been palpable. The staff care about the well-being of their residents. The building is clean and management is receptive to constructive feedback.
