I had kept my mom with Dementia/Alzheimer's for about 3-4 years and when the disease progressed, we needed to find somewhere she could go that could give her the extra care she needed around the clock. A friend told me that she knew some people that lived at the Barrington and it was a great place and we needed to check it out. From Day 1 we were astounded at the attentiveness of the staff and helping us to transition mom to their memory care unit. Letting mom go was very hard for me but knowing she was at the Barrington made it a little easier the staff there are wonderful she is well taken care of and has even made a few friends. It took a few weeks, but mom settled in just great she stopped asking to go home constantly. The Barrington has lots of activities to keep the residents engaged. My mom loves music and they do a lot of singing and dancing and it is so wonderful to see her happy. Rachel was the one who walked us through the whole process, and she did a wonderful job she really cares about her residents and their families. I cannot say enough about the Barrington and their staff. They have been upfront and transparent the whole time as well about everything. They have a nurse practitioner on staff so no need to worry about taking mom to the doctor they can do what she needs right there in house. I know mom is in good hands and that means I can sleep better at night.

My mother was lured here under the promise that she'd be able to keep her unusually large but old and friendly dog (a Newfoundland: if you know the breed then you know). It was not six weeks until they demanded $700 a month in cleaning fees for Gemma. I've cleaned up after that dog's hair at earlier apartments and KNOW it doesn't cost that much. This was a complete grift, and we left ASAP.<br><br>The facility has other problems as well. The food is terrible - nothing unusual for an ALF there - but the medical staff is unprofessional to the point it is downright unethical. My mother had blood withdrawn for no clear reason, and when I asked for the results the chief nurse at the facility stonewalled me for months. We've since left the facility and I still haven't gotten any paperwork. There's just something off about these people as an organization. I hope all RUI facilities aren't like this but I hope even more deeply that I'll never know for sure. I regret putting my mother there, but I'm glad I got her out when I did.

The Barrington at Hioaks scammed my elderly mother for close to $5000 for a cancelled application. We were pressured to provide payment authorization weeks before we were complete with the application process, then they immediately withdrew rent for about $3,000. This is in addition to the non-refundable "community" fee, which is what secures an apartment. This was a dirty sales tactic and they won't refund the rent taken, even though we cancelled the application. What value or service was provided for the rent? Absolutely none, it was effectively a "gotcha" scam. The parent company RUI are blatently unethical and they do NOT care about your loved ones, they just want to steal their money. And as another reviewer mentioned, most of their positive reviews are fake. Believe the low rated ones.

AVOID THIS PLACE AND ANY RETIREMENT UNLIMITED, INC PROPERTY. THEIR POLICIES ARE TERRIBLE AND TOTALLY NON-COMPASSIONATE. My parents have been residents at Barrington ay Hioaks in Richmond (a RUI property) since August 2022. My mother needed assisted living; however, my father is independent living. They complained all the time about the food. It was cold, bland and inedible. Also, they stopped serving dinner very early. They also complained about the time it took for an aide or nurse to come to their apartment after pushing their call button. Recently, my mother started to decline health wise and was confined to her hospital bed. She passed away approximately 8am on January 1, 2024. After dealing with the grief for a few days, we inquired about my dad leaving since he really did not need to live there. The staff approached him about moving to a 1 bedroom since he wouldn’t need 2 bedrooms anymore. We were told that he would be required to pay for my mom’s assisted living charges for January in addition to his “add on” cost. Then he could give his 30 days’ notice only on February 1st and would have to pay for charges for February also. We asked about compassion since our mom had passed away at 8am on January 1st and dad wanted to move back to Williamsburg to be closer to family. The director, Ms. Mills, stated that this was their policy for 40 years and they weren’t changing it. My mom was literally alive for 8 hours in January 2024 and still they are requiring him to pay for 2 months before letting him out of the contract. I left messages for Ms. Mills to return my call and she never did. I also called the corporate offices of RUI asking for a call. NO ONE RETURNED MY MESSAGES. RIDICULOUS. DO NOT go to a RUI property especially Barrington at Hioaks.<br><br>UPDATE: Please look at the 5 star reviews that have been recently posted. None of them are from RESIDENTS. They are from "people" (probably employees or their family members) who took a TOUR of the facility. None from anyone who actually lives there. There are other posts from actual employees INCLUDING THE DIRECTOR of the facility, Ms Mills!!!! They are just trying to hide the actual resident and family bad 1 star reviews. I have reported all of the employee reviews to Google. I still have never heard from anyone at that facility other than 2 of the physical therapists who reached out after my father's recent passing. STAY AWAY!!!
