My Mom had Alzheimer’s and spent the last two years of her life at Sun AFH. Before choosing Sun AFH, I visited several other adult family homes, assisted living communities, and nursing homes in the area. What made Sun AFH stand out to me was the genuine connection the owner, staff, and residents had with each other. The owner, Sun, is incredibly kind and compassionate. She and her caregivers really get to know the residents. Because her family lives on-site, there’s a sense of warmth and presence in the home. My Mom felt comfortable there—she made close bonds with the other residents, spending time together over meals, watching TV, or just talking. I really appreciated how they celebrated birthdays and holidays. Sun would send me videos of my mom laughing and enjoying herself at these gatherings, which meant a lot. The location is another bonus—the home is right up the hill from the Des Moines waterfront, so it was easy for me to take Mom out for ice cream or fish and chips by the water on the weekends. I should also mention that Sun has experience with Alzheimer’s and hospice patients, which gave me a lot of peace of mind. As someone new to all of this, I could ask her questions about what was normal and what to expect, and she always gave me honest, straightforward answers. Highly recommended and grateful to find such a good fit for my Mom.
