My mom is 86 and has Alzheimer’s. In mid-April, she was physically fine. A UTI left her unable to feed herself, stand, or walk. This is how she ended up at Stallings Court (SC) for six weeks.

There are a few good nurses/aides at SC, but the vast majority aren’t worth spit. The good ones cared about, helped, and were kind to my mom. The rest were indifferent at best, rude, dismissive of my concerns, and unprofessional.

I visited Mom everyday. After two days, when she spent about 21 hours a day in bed unable to turn, I told one of dismissive nurses I wanted her dressed and in her wheelchair by 9 a.m. She said, “I’ll make a note.” Two days later, when nothing had changed, I lost it and demanded to see the director. I told her what they should’ve known—leaving her in bed that long in the same position would cause pressure sores. The director promised to make sure she was dressed and up every morning after breakfast. Too late.

I put a camera in Mom’s room. That night I was watching when a skin breakdown was found on her right heel. I texted the director that we needed to talk again. No response.

The next morning, I texted her again from Mom’s room. She responded this time. Before I left Mom’s room, she fell out of her wheelchair onto her head. Why? Some idiot put a pillow in her chair that changed her center of gravity. Instead of meeting with the director, I spent the day at NMC ER where Mom got a CT scan.

While the day shift had a few good nurses/aids, the night shift people are rhymes with witches. With the camera, I checked on Mom often while not there. One night, the light directly above her face was on. I called and asked them to turn it off. Thirty minutes later, still on. I called again and was told the same thing. Thirty minutes later, still on. On the third call, I said, “I’m not asking, I’m telling you to have someone turn the damn light off.” She copped an attitude and said, “Do not curse me, sir!” I said damn isn’t a cuss word and she hung up on me. I called back twice. She picked up the phone and hung up. On the fourth call, someone else answered and told me I’d upset the other person by cursing her. I told this one damn wasn’t a cuss word and to turn the damn light off. Hung up on me.

After this, the night shift people wouldn’t answer my calls. Completely unacceptable and unprofessional. After that, I’d text my sisters and one of them would call.

I reported the pressure sore and fall to HHSC. An investigator made a surprise visit to SC, took my full report, and talked with the director. The investigator didn’t fault SC for Mom’s fall. That baffled me, but okay. She did fault SC for the pressure sore. This results in a report to the state and a fine. I hope the fine is huge!

Even with Mom’s name in all her clothes, SC lost them often. They routinely missed her bed bath days because they were “short staffed.” Not an excuse under federal and state laws.

Bottom line, if you love your parents/grandparents, don’t put them in SC. All the crap I went through was with a camera in her room, I can’t begin to imagine how neglected those without cameras are treated. Try the place in Garrison instead.
