About Preferred Care at Home of Virginia Beach

Preferred Care at Home of Virginia Beach provides in-home care services in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and the Hampton Roads area. The agency offers non-medical support including assistance with activities of daily living, memory care for clients with cognitive decline, social engagement, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and post-hospital recovery support, allowing older adults to remain in their own homes with dignity and independence.

The agency matches caregivers to clients through a 7-step screening process based on personality, background, and experience. Caregivers are selected specifically for their qualifications in areas such as dementia care, mobility assistance, and companionship. Families receive access to visit notes and schedules through the Transparency Room portal, giving real-time visibility into care activities.

Preferred Care at Home is VA-contracted and prioritizes service to veterans, reflecting Virginia Beach's significant veteran population of 52,520 according to 2024 census data. The agency assists families with Long Term Care insurance claims, including claim filing and navigating coverage gaps. Care typically begins within days of an initial consultation, with personalized care plans developed around each client's specific needs and circumstances.

The agency addresses common challenges facing Hampton Roads families, including rising care costs, high rates of older adults living alone, and coastal storm disruptions. Preferred Care at Home builds continuity plans with backup staffing protocols to maintain care during declared emergencies, as occurred during Tropical Storm Helene in 2024. The agency helps families understand what Medicare covers and does not cover, clarifying that Medicare does not typically cover ongoing non-medical in-home care but may cover limited skilled home health services when doctor-ordered.

Medicare's GUIDE Program offers qualifying Virginia Beach families a dedicated care navigator, 24/7 care team access through partner PocketRN, and respite support at no cost. The agency was founded on the principle of answering families' unanswered questions during transitions to home-based care, drawing on the founder's personal experience bringing his World War II veteran father home from the hospital.

I worked for Preferred Care for about a year, and they were an excellent company to work for. I was trained by Lynne, who oversaw the caregivers and was one of the best caregivers I met in the field. She helped me grow in my role, taught me how to do my job better, and gave valuable advice regarding certifications and professional development. And I also got to meet other great senior caregivers in the company who gave me advice and guidance that I will cherish. The entire Preferred Care team treated me with professionalism and respect throughout my time there! (Even when I had to leave for a bit for health reasons. They also offered certain optional perks like Aflac). Everyone from the owner, Deck, to Kristina and all of the scheduling staff, were consistently supportive and kind! The clock-in and clock-out app was easy to use, pay was weekly and on time, clear communication, and there were incentives for high-priority cases. Work opportunities were consistent, and the clients were wonderful! I truly enjoyed every client I cared for through Preferred Care and made meaningful memories while supporting them in the comfort of their homes. Any caregiver looking for a reliable, professional, and supportive workplace should strongly consider Preferred Care. They were nothing but good to me, and I’m grateful for the experience!

The team from Preferred Care is excellent. We brought them in to help care for my mother who suffers from Alzheimer's as well as mobility and communication disabilities after suffering a stroke in 2015. Having the care team, and specifically Shani at my parent's home daily has provided us piece of mind knowing that Mom is well cared for. Shani always goes above and beyond in her care of our Momma. Momma loves Shani and always looks to her for love and assurance. Shani bathes her, assists her in her many requests to go the bathroom, helps her exercise, cooks for her and does her laundry. In addition, her experience in elder care has helped us immensely in understanding the natural progression of her decline as well as alerting us to health issues that need immediate attention. Our family can highly recommend Preferred Care at Home of VB as a trusted team to care for your family member.

I would like to thank and compliment the managers, especially Carolyn for the excellent and compassionate care my mother received in her home. An outstanding facet of Preferred Care was the communication with me when I had any concerns or questions. The response and attention to detail was prompt and the follow up with the relevant caregivers was handled very well. And most important, the caregivers who worked with my mother showed real concern, kindness and understanding of my mother's special needs due to her Alziemers. Therefore I would recommend Preferred Care to anyone who needs quality care for their loved ones.
