The staff at North Woods are some of the most kind and compassionate people I've ever met. They took exceptional care of my mother and all the residents.

The receptionist is very friendly and welcoming and when I initially spoke to Rick and he was very friendly and engaging. He said this facility had 24/7 nursing care and their assisting living facility was designed to accommodate dementia or Alzheimer’s patients and I asked him if they had a hoyer to assist my husband and he said yes they would accommodate.

He gave me a tour of the facility and said since he felt like my husband would be a good candidate and said that I could put the $500 deposit for the private room that I chose by the courtyard.

The inefficiencies in the application process caused me severe, unnecessary distress. My husband is currently on hospice for his dementia. The three weeks spent navigating your bureaucracy stripped away irreplaceable time that I should have spent by his side, plus the communication from the Admissions Office was almost nonexistent.

My husband is completely bed bound, has zero history of falls once he was provided the correct hospital bed with assist grab bars, and sleeps throughout the day.

Furthermore, Nurse Jessica while doing her assessment told me she would recommend my husband but it was up to Rick from admissions whether to admit him or not.

Plus when Nurse Jessica made this supposed denial after her visit where my husband slept the entire time, rendering a comprehensive assessment impossible, and the information I gave her won’t have prevented him from being accepted into the facility.

We were highly anticipating this placement because my husband's brother coaches at KVCC and his son is going to play basketball there. The environment inside is cramped, and there is a persistent, noticeable smell of urine that makes visits very uncomfortable.

Additionally, Gentiva Hospice would have assisted with showers twice a week and their doctor was taking care of medications, as well as providing a hospital bed and all supplies.

If his medical profile truly did not align with your criteria, Nurse Jessica should have conducted her assessment before I spent hours on paperwork and three weeks coordinating documentation from Alamo Nursing Home.

Beside the fact that Social Worker from Hospice had mentioned that Bill must have been accepted because there a welcome William Horn and Room Number which she told me was highly unusual because a nurse assessment hadn’t been done yet.

Review of the clinical records reveals a critical contradiction regarding my husband's primary diagnosis and subsequent care path. While both Gentiva Hospice and the State of Michigan OBRA program formally determined that he qualifies for hospice care due to severe dementia, the skilled nursing facility’s two attending physicians have continuously documented a primary mental illness instead.

Additionally, a review of public records and feedback regarding your facility reveals deeply concerning reports. These include the mistreatment of dementia residents, unauthorized restrictions on family visitations, and the sudden transfer of medically complex residents to distant facilities, such as Crown Point, Indiana.

In light of these widespread compliance and care concerns, I agree that your facility is unequipped to care for my husband, making this denial a fortunate outcome for his safety.

8-13-2026
My wife is a resident at North Woods Village in Kalamazoo and I have been greatly pleased with the choice that I made in getting her there. The staff has been wonderful, giving respect, dignity, and comfort to all that are there including the resident’s loved ones. By the staff I mean not only the caregivers but the cooks, the concierge, and nurses and so on. They have all gone out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. I’m also happy with the daily planned activities they have from exercise to social gatherings, engaging as many residents as possible. My beloved wife is happy and adjusted in her surroundings and I am so thankful that this was the place I chose for her.
Chuck Swanson

North Woods Village of Kalamazoo is a great place for memory care. It is a beautiful facility with well equipped spacious rooms and they have top notch staff from the administration, nursing, food, maintenance and even volunteers. They work with residents individually as well as offering activities in groups, for example morning movement, bingo, balloon volleyball, or social hour and live music and sing-alongs. The staff that interact and work with residents are caring, calm and friendly as well as helpful to visitors. They offer wonderful food to meet the needs of residents and they have a super chef with a super staff. It’s always clean and looks bright and inviting. Everyone is helpful and caring here. When people say it “takes a village”, North Woods Village is the place to be. I am glad I found them.
