Kahealani, Kahea, as she introduced herself to me over the phone, I found out later, is a fairly new resident manager of Manoa Gardens Affordable Housing since February 2022. Because I am a deep admirer of Hawaiian culture, I ask her for a translation of her name, it means "call of the heavens" in Hawaiian. I am a 66 year old senior Hawaii citizen in search of affordable housing options available. When I called, Kahea said she would be available later that afternoon to give me a tour of Manoa Gardens Senior housing facility, she was most gracious and thorough in walking me around explaining in detail about this nice property. After the tour, she spent time assisting me with filling out an application. I wanted to write this review as a mahalo to Kahealani, who I have to congratulate for truly living up to her Hawaiian namesake. So big mahalo Kahealani thanks for taking my call and taking time for a viewing at Manoa Gardens, reminding me that the call to heaven is 🌈 🌈 not impossible and the stuff that life is all about!

Was really torn on writing this review for fear of backlash towards a loved one who resides at this complex. But realized, that lack of accountability in the past has probably led to the less then welcoming vibes this place promotes. This is my personal opinion of events that have played out, and not a reflection of our loved ones opinion. I imagine they'd disagree with the action of leaving this review at all for the reasons I mentioned above and drawing unwanted attention.

Two specific situations rubbed me the wrong way and both have to do with management.

1. Within the FIRST WEEK our loved ones car window was blown out. I don't think it was a manner of theft, because there are way nicer cars around then a 2004 sedan(not to mention elderly people are naturally cautious and there was nothing to cause temptation inside the car and nothing was stolen), but rather an accident caused by the people hired to tend the landscape and cut the grass. I believe a weed whacker or blade to a lawnmower launched a small stone or pebble with enough force to strike and break the window to our loved ones car who is parked directly next to a patch of grass. It's just too coincidental that our loved ones window was broken and nothing was stolen the same day the grass was cut. Upon reporting the incident, our loved ones were told that "sometimes that just happens and windows break by themselves" and that they asked the gardeners if they broke the window, to which they responded no. For a contract retention, what person would admit to causing damage to property? Anyways, it was a bad first impression that management portrayed very little sympathy towards the situation. To me, now it's a manner of safety. I've read the review left nearly 2 years ago, that mentioned cameras on premises. That's either a lie, or management didn't even care enough to attempt to watch the footage. Even typing this out is patronizing to say that "sometimes car windows just break by themselves". Anyways, our loved ones move-in present was replacing their own car window with no explanation.

2. At the time of this review, it's Memorial Day weekend, and my partner and I do our best to visit our loved one as much as possible. Upon leaving the premises, we put our 4 lbs dog down on the grass by our car to take pictures because Manoa Gardens is OBJECTIVELY beautiful with the tress, grass, and mountain background. And for better understanding of location, guest parking is a block away from the actual homes and closer to the road. While taking a video, a car rolls up with a woman demanding to know if we're visiting someone. Without identifying herself(we do not know what Michelle looks like at this point), in the most KAREN way possible. She's adamant in finding out the room, and name of our loved one and proceeds to tell us NO DOGS are allowed on the grass. Which is a straight up lie because even if that is an actual rule, it for sure isn't enforced. A third of the residents have dogs, not to mention manoa gardens is directly next to a PARK. Manoa Gardens and the park share a parking lot!! It wasn't until the end of the exchange when we started REFLECTING this Karen's attitude, that she finally identified herself as the manager, threw up the most sarcastic Shaka and drove off like she made a point. Luckily I filmed the exchange to prove to our loved one that Michelle came off less then positive first and if she would have simply enlightened us of the rules and identified herself accordingly, the exchange would not have escalated.

Honestly, it's just disappointing. That the person who represents the values of Manoa Gardens as an elderly home isn't more accommodating to its residents or welcoming to visitors. I could understand if we were skateboarding or being loud and lingering. In that case her aggressive questioning would have been justified. But to a couple there paying respects to a love one, is just overkill and quite frankly, a POWERTRIP. Do better Michelle, and make an effort to not deter family members and loved ones from visiting your residents.🤙🏾🤙🏾

There have been many reported break-ins, and thefts, or vandalism, in all of the community gardens, so I can understand why the gardeners may be wary of visitors walking through the gardens. We need to be careful not to assume that someone who may look suspicious, is there to take something, but also, they need to understand our concern as well.
