Lunalilo Home

Lunalilo Home is a residential care community in Honolulu, Hawaii, offering residential care, respite care, adult day care, and meals-to-go services for kūpuna (elders). Founded in 1871 through the will of King Lunalilo, it is the first charitable institution established by a Hawaiian chief and moved to its current location in 1928. The home serves all elders with a preference for Native Hawaiians and continues King Lunalilo's mission to provide shelter and care for the Hawaiian people.

The community provides comfortable accommodations and a vibrant setting where residents participate in frequent recreational, cultural, and spiritual activities. Staff members, including nurses, caregivers, and cultural practitioners, are guided by core values of aloha, haʻahaʻa, hoʻomanawanui, laulima, and kūlia i ka nuʻu—centering compassionate, culturally rooted care.

Lunalilo Home offers respite or short-term residential care lasting from a few days to several weeks, allowing family caregivers a break from daily caregiving routines while their loved ones receive supervised, structured care. The Adult Day Care Center provides a social and safe environment where kūpuna receive health, nutritional, and daily living support from specially trained staff while family caregivers maintain peace of mind.

The Meals-to-Go program delivers nutritious, locally-prepared meals designed for healthy senior living, supporting both single seniors and couples seeking to maintain independence. The program has delivered over 165,000 meals to kūpuna across Oʻahu, addressing food security and ensuring connection and care throughout the community.

Lunalilo Home's history reflects deep roots in Hawaiian culture and community. Since opening in Makiki in 1883, it became recognized by the 1920s as a center for Hawaiian culture. The King Lunalilo Trust has provided substantial financial subsidies to ensure that Native Hawaiian residents can access full-time care regardless of financial circumstances, honoring the founder's commitment to uplift those in need.
