At some point you will probably have to make a decision about hospice for a loved one. When it came time for my mom’s hospice we had to make a decision to have her do hospice at home and hire a 24 hour nurse in addition to hospice or pay for my mom to stay at a facility and hospice would come to the facility. Our hospice company was Vitas and we chose to have my mom stay at Lakewood for her hospice as we felt hiring a nurse at home wasn’t going to provide her enough care. Our hospice company/nurses stopped in at Lakewood maybe twice a day so 99% plus of my mom’s care was really provided by Lakewood. Lakewood’s main purpose is to be a retirement community not a hospice center but to my family from the moment we got to Lakewood they were amazing to my mom and family. The first night everything seemed to be going wrong and Paula the social services director stayed well after hours to be there for my family and help anyway she could. Ron, the administrator, learned my mom was on hospice and somehow got us a private room for my mom’s final 4 days just in time for her last rights. Moses is a nurse we always saw at night and he has a gift for caring for people. Moses probably never knew that at like midnight when most residents were asleep we’d hear him talking to some of the residents and he loved his job and truly cared and we could hear it. Moses was always diligent about making his rounds through rooms. I only wish I knew the name of the young lady who sat with my mom one night for hours because she was coughing a lot. I only wish I knew the name also of another nurse who often made sure my mom had fresh clothes and came to change her clothes right before my mom passed. When we’d have multiple people visiting my mom and it was time for a meal, Lakewood always found us a room we could use to sit at a table and have a family meal. I’m very glad we made the decision for my mom to complete her hospice journey at Lakewood and I’ll never forget the kindness and caring of everyone working at Lakewood!
