I am sharing our experience because I believe clear communication is important when families are going through the housing application process.

My mother was applying to the community, and I was assisting her throughout the process. Following her home interview, we were given the impression that she would be approved and that there were no additional stipulations or concerns. We were not contacted afterward to inform us that her application had been denied.

After waiting for an update, I went to the facility in person to ask about the status of her application. I was then informed that my mother had been rejected.

As someone experiencing this process for the first time, I had questions about the decision and wanted to understand what had changed. During this conversation, the Social Worker’s response to my questions was, in my view, highly inappropriate and disproportionate to the situation. The interaction was extremely unsettling, particularly because I was simply seeking clarification. I apologized and explained that I was confused and trying to understand what had happened, but I was still asked to leave and ultimately escorted and followed off the property….

I understand that applicants may not meet a community’s requirements. However, I believe applicants and their families should receive timely communication about decisions and be treated respectfully when asking reasonable questions about the process.
