My dad is on his second day here. He has spatial neglect of his left side currently do to a stroke, so no movement on that side. He’s also has had a craniotomy, so he doesn’t have his skull cap. He is not able to hold his body straight and his memory goes in & out. Basically very, very, VERY fragile. He was transferred from Cardinal hill and they know no info about him. He hadn’t been taking his pain meds or heart burn meds (which he is prescribed since we had an episode that was so bad we got sent to UK for 2 weeks). Well, I visit frequently & today I came and he was in his wheel chair eating what looked like slop. He wouldn’t touch it. His diet got updated before leaving Cardinal hill to small soft bites. But yet they puréed a ham, mayonnaise and cheese sandwich.. can you imagine how awful that looked? I brought him a burger and fries and he scarfed it down. After leaving I didn’t think to check if he had safety belts/alarms on because I mean that is a given right? He can’t hold himself up properly, why would he not have extra safety precautions taken? Well I’m in the hall talking to the desk staff (which do seem nice) and lo and behold my dad falls in the floor!!!! He lays there for at least 5 min before anyone notices!! I had to be the one to come and hold him off the floor until the ambulance arrived. Thankfully nothing was broken, but this could have easily broken something major or worse killed him!!!
I will not keep quiet about this. My heart is broken and my poor dad is so sore after something that could have been so easily prevented! Negligence on their part.
Updated Review (as of Dec 29):
As of November 25th, we moved my dad out of this facility and into another one due to insurance issues. Unfortunately, Fountain Circle did not mention the option to appeal the insurance decision. We pursued an appeal ourselves and actually won it—though insurance never notified us, and by the time we found out, Fountain Circle no longer had any available beds.
That said, after being in our current facility, I can honestly say that Fountain Circle now feels like a dream in comparison.
At Fountain Circle, staff talked to my dad like a human being. They consistently cleaned him up and he was able to shower about twice a week. I was allowed to bring in personal items for him without issue. When he needed accommodations, they made them. And when I was vocal about concerns, they listened.
It wasn’t perfect—no place is, and I understand staff have a lot on their plates—but overall the care was noticeably better than where we are now. They were willing to take my dad to the bathroom, and they even allowed him to roam the halls and socialize with friends, which meant so much to him and to us.
Overall, I do recommend Fountain Circle.
My biggest advice to families is this: visit often, be vocal, and advocate for your loved one when they can’t do it themselves.
If we could get back in there, we would in a heartbeat.
Almost 3 weeks ago, my Alzheimers riddled Papa was walking down his hallway and fell on his face. We promptly called EMS and he headed off to the hospital. Days later, he was transferred to Fountain Circle Rehab Center, a place that had caused my grandmother's demise in 1999. We were not notified that he'd been transferred until Sunday though he had been transferred on Friday night after an evening family visit, at the local hospital.
By the time he left, 2 weeks (I believe) later, he could no longer walk, had a horrid bed sore and had been taught to poop the bed, wallow unit, until someone noticed the smell and changed his bedding. The poopy bed certainly caused complications with his bedsores (that we were never made privy to).
Fountain Circle made us aware that he could no longer stay there bc his Medicare had run out. We were told he'd be covered through Sunday but could only help us get him in if he left on this past Friday, September 26, 2024. We knew he wasn't ready to come home because he could no longer walk & didn't even have enough strength to get him to a bedside potty.
Fountain Circle waited until nightfall, had a transport company drop him off at the bottom of my mom & Papa's driveway. We had to call the Fire/EMS Department to get him up the concrete steps, into the house, then up the house steps and into the bed he shared with mom, for 38 years.
In the wee hours of September 28, 2024, at 12:30AM my mom had to rest on the couch before heading back to bed with Pop. She fell asleep and awakened at 6:04AM...finding my Papa dead. He was not strong enough to get the covers from his face, after rolling to give relief to his painful bedsores. So, in essence, my Papa comes home from intensive PT at this "rehab facility," but comes back much weaker, in someone else's clothing, wounds we were never made aware of and weaker / frailer than he was before going to the hospital. This death was not an accident; this death was not just a travesty; this death reeks of willful neglect, but more they killed him just as their neglect (many years ago) killed my grandma.
Please, don't let this place take your most treasured and beloved. There are good rehab and, even nursing homes out there. Please:
• take the time to find the right one
• you and your family set the goals and expectations, then find out their plan to met your family's goal
• visit often and hold hem accountable to your families milestones, dates and goals.
Please, don't let your loved one be another victim of places like these. Do your research; take lots of pictures bc you never know what you're gonna need and stay vigilant! I pray all that read this have a better outcome than we recently did.
Do not bring your family here. The FIRST DAY they refused to give my mother her pain medication. She has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread into her bones. Specifically her SPINE. So you can imagine the pain she feels on a daily basis. I had to take off work and threaten the staff with lawsuits to get them to do anything. I had her oncologist himself call and verify her medication and they told us that they were not part of their network so they wouldn’t do anything until Their doctor prescribed it. My mother sat there in pain for 2 days before informing me. How can you listen to a person cry in pain and not do anything!
Her phone charger kept coming up missing or stolen, I replaced it 3 times in a 2 week period. She was told by a nurse to not keep any valuables because they have a history of things going missing, are you joking! Finally had to get her out of there because her feet were swollen, her cognitive ability declined and the weekend nursing staff are absolutely useless. The only nurse there that seemed to care at all was Peggy. The beds are ancient and uncomfortable. The whole place smells like urine. And everyone has to share rooms. My mother had a space about 6’x10’ to live in. Do not take your family members here unless you just don’t care about them.
Also the food here is absolutely terrible, usually the food is cold. Everything is just processed garbage, I’ve eaten better food in jail! Constantly had to bring my mother food because what they gave her wasn’t suitable to throw in the hogs slop. They brought her a glass of OJ for breakfast and there was only about 1oz in the glass! Asked a nurse for another glass, and they just disappeared.
My mother was only there for inpatient physical therapy before coming home from the hospital. She left in an ambulance, back to the hospital in worse condition than when she got there. I threatened them with a lawsuit and they will be very lucky if I don’t follow through. If anyone else has had terrible experiences like this let me know any we will file a class action against them!
So my situation is different than most people that come here. Had some concerns at first, but after the staff figured out what my needs were, couldn't ask for better place or people, from nurses, rehab, maintenance, was all you could ask for. They took care of all my needs and would listen to any suggestions I had. They're even pet friendly. Would recommend this facility to anyone that needs care. They try their best to make you feel at home.I would be happy to come back here if I had to. A big thank you to everyone that has taken care of me so far!
My mom is receiving very loving care here from a staff of wonderful people dedicated to to quality care and life for each person . Thank you mama is in need of rehab care and this establishment is top notch .
I had such pleasant interactions with Jessica rehab gal for my mom and who was so kind and patient with her in moms journey getting strength back in her legs. Also Dandy a sweet and vigilant hard working cleaning gal always cheerful doing diligent cleaning in room keep it smelling nice and disinfected . Also Sweet Nurse Peggy we thank you for your oversight with your team of hard working gals and guys there contributing to a very nice stay. for mom .We love you all and take good care of yourselves too as you do a very important job in contributing to quality care of our family members .
