Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe Care Center

The Joseph Robinson Elder Care Facility in Flandreau, South Dakota, is a skilled nursing care community operated by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. Named after a founding member of the Wakpa Ipaksan Dakota Community, the facility opened in October 2022 and provides long-term care and memory care services to residents from Native American nations throughout the region.

The care center operates three neighborhoods: two dedicated to long-term care and one to specialized memory care. The facility serves up to 42 residents, with 14 residing in a secured memory care unit. Skilled nursing services include assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, feeding tubes, trachs, assistance with medical appointments, and diabetes management. Physicians make weekly rounds to ensure appropriate care for each resident.

The facility features private rooms for all residents, a state-of-the-art dietary area, formal gathering and ceremonial space, and a spa with a whirlpool tub, showers, and salon services including haircuts. Each neighborhood includes a dining room and living room with a fireplace and large-screen television for residents and guests. A passenger loading bay provides convenient access without exposure to the elements, and staff are available to assist with off-site medical appointments.

The community was designed with a beautiful courtyard featuring privacy fences and reflects the facility's cultural commitment to elder care, drawing inspiration from the tribal tradition of family members caring for their elders.
