About Emerald Glen Assisted Living

Emerald Glen Memory Care Plus is a memory care community in Mesa, Arizona, completed in July 2018 by owners Jennifer Tonna RN and engineer Patrick Tonna. The facility specializes in caring for residents with cognitive impairment and related medical needs, building on the reputation of three existing Emerald Groves facilities.

The building design addresses the specific challenges of memory care through thoughtful environmental features. Hallways are kept short to ease way-finding difficulties, and secure outdoor courtyards permit unrestricted wandering. Two separate dining areas allow residents to maintain dignity during meals, and a secure front patio overlooks the street. Rooms range from 200-300 square feet and can accommodate personal furnishings to create a feeling of home; bathrooms are private. Couples are welcome to share rooms if desired.

The community emphasizes comfort and familiarity through vintage memorabilia and tactile objects throughout the facility, with the hope that familiar items spark memories residents can share. Staff work with healthcare providers and therapists to address residents' medical needs, including mobility support and fall risk reduction. The community also offers standard assisted living services and supports to meet daily care needs.

Programming is individualized based on current residents' preferences and interests. The activity calendar and nutritious menu are both flexible and designed to follow residents' personal choices and enjoyments. Staff also seek to learn about residents' past careers and accomplishments, incorporating meaningful work and purposeful activities into daily life.

My mom has been with Emerald Glen Memory Care plus for over 7 years and receives the best care there. The staff are very attentive to her needs, her medication has been 100% on time and given with love and care. This place is her home and they treat us and my mom like family. They are able to cater to her dietary needs, with trained chefs that serve healthy, complete and let me tell you delicious meals. This care center is beautiful and very clean, something you don't see in many care centers. Their visiting hours are extremely flexible. Our extended family takes the time to visit mom during the week and they treat us like family too. We have seen the care they give all of their clients, and mom is not the exception, they all get treated equally well. Before you go anywhere else check this place out, come at lunch or dinner and observe the special care their clients receive and you will see for yourself.

My mother currently resides at Emerald Glen. She, and our family, are very pleased with the quality of care she receives. Daily, a family member is present in the facility visiting and spending time with her. These daily visits have provided the opportunity to watch the caregivers, facility supervisors, and owners do their best to provide an exceptional level of care to residents. The owners are engaged and active in the operations. They know the residents and staff on a first name basis. Giving the opportunity they also are eager to engage with family. The owners are proud of their family owned business, and the service level their staff provides. They encourage an open transparent relationship with resident’s family by welcoming their presence and involvement at the home. Caregivers, chefs, and housekeeping staff are very caring and focused on providing residents with the best care possible while treating them like friends or a family member. The caregivers I interact with take personal ownership of those under their care. I recall one of my mother’s caregivers telling me, as she referred to those in her care, “ They are my babies, I take care of them”. I have watched staff patiently support residents through those tough days, taking extra time for a walk, sitting down to visit, or giving a resident an opportunity vent a few “big feelings.” Attention to detail among staff is strong. They are conscientious passing on a family’s care concerns between shifts. They respond promptly to call buttons and proactively check in on residents frequently, especially if families express a need. I’ve watched the caregivers work closely together as a team. If one is busy, or engaged, they coordinate among their teammates to insure residents receive timely assistance. Chefs clearly enjoy taking a moment to visit with residents about the menu items and recipes. Occasionally, if the days menu doesn’t agree with someone, or an appetite needs encouragement, time is taken to dress up the presentation of a special plate of food. Housekeeping is top notch. The private rooms and shared areas are equally clean and well maintained. A notable example of the staff’s commitment took place over a holiday weekend when my motherbecame ill. The facility site manager, who was out of state for a weekend, spend significant phone time coordinating care between my mother’s PC provider, the facility staff, and myself to insure she received the necessary care. At the end of the weekend, after returning late in the day, she went to the facility to personally check in on her. This was a level of investment I did not expect. Our family is experienced dealing with care facilities. Before moving to Emerald Glenn my mother spent many years at a large corporate owned assisted living home. There, she required supplemental care by our family and private caregivers. With any facility or service there will be issues and problems. The differentiator between facilities is how those issues are addressed. In those circumstances I have found Emerald Glen staff and owners to be receptive and responsive. In some cases their response was limited by regulatory issues. Staff would always would take the time to explain why they were unable to meet the specific need, and then work to work with family toward an acceptable resolution. I have no reservations saying my mother is safe and receives the best care possible from caregivers who treat her with dignity, respect, and kindness. Her presence at Emerald Glen allows our family to focus on enjoying time with her and feel relief knowing she will be safe and well cared if something unexpected would prohibit family support.

Sherri came into your lives at Emerald Glen in September 2024. She was first diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis in 2017, and her care was then provided at home by her family for the next six plus years, remaining in the home she loved, with the help of those who loved her. This was what she wanted, what we all wanted. It was not easy, coming with numerous setbacks and challenges for her and those helping, sometimes heartbreaking. There was nothing anyone could do to slow Sherri’s decline, while the requirement for medical care continued to increase steadily, finally exceeding our ability to provide the necessary care and assistance in her home. It was then that we turned to Emerald Glen and you. Without any hesitation or second thought….the care you provided to Sherri was exceptional. All the caregivers became her friends, several very close friends. Individually and as a group, they became her lifeline to reality….more importantly to life. She enjoyed getting to know where you all had come from, about your own families….your own thoughts and experiences. This all helped her to stay in the “present”, to avoid looking backward or focus on her own problems, which were many. And so, the extra time you all spent just speaking of those things with her made a big difference in her quality of life and attitude. This empathy, kindness, and respect that you showed to Sherri, and to all in her family, was the hallmark of the care you provided to her. Please know that our Thank You is heartfelt, as is our appreciation for your efforts to make Sherri comfortable, safe, and without fear while she was in your care at Emerald Glen. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE. We admitted our father to emerald green in April. After meeting with owners and having them meet our father prior to him being admitted we were told they had the capacity and capability to offer him the attention he needed. We made it clear he had dementia and emerald green claims to be a memory care facility. They do not. They charge a very high premium for memory care. But they would leave him unattended for hours and the. They would sedate him when he acted up. He weighs about 120 pounds and is fragile. They said he would act out so they’d avoid giving him attention and care. They admitted to sedating him during times he shouldn’t have been. This was only discovered after we requested his medical history from the nurses. Do not send your loved ones here. They will tell you they care about your family member but they do the absolute bare minimum. We had a wireless camera installed in his room. He would be left unattended for hours towards the end of his stay there. He was there for a few months until they told us he was acting out and we moved him to a much better facility who actually noticed he acted like he’d been abused. The new facility he is in confirmed our suspicions that he’d been ignored and acted like he’d been sedated for no reason. I don’t write reviews for anything but do not use emerald glen.

Even while under construction this place was stunning! The attention to detail is incredible from the grand piano to the different themed hallways, huge rooms with enormous windows, a shelf outside of every room to showcase the resident, enormous garden boxes to grow food, access to the outdoors with security around the perimeter. It is well planned and clearly a lot of thought went into how to make the memory patients comfortable and safe.
