Please, don’t go here if you have no insurance and are a person of colour. My husband went to the ER here, twice, for the same issue and was sent home both times. Telling him to go to the Good Samaritan clinic. We came to UAB Birmingham for a second opinion because they were absolutely no help. My husband is now in the hospital at UAB undergoing emergency surgery. I’ve been in the healthcare field for over 20 years and I’ve never dealt with this type of treatment from a healthcare facility. Do Better!

I had an excellent experience at the hospital. The nurses were consistently compassionate and kind. I didn’t have to wait long for a response when I called for them. Every staff member I had contact with was extremely courteous and helpful. They always asked if I needed anything and showed true concern for my comfort.

I had one of the scariest nights ive had in a while. Might have been scariest for my fiance. I had a seizure while riding home with my fiance out of nowhere with no personal or family history of them. The paramedics in the ambulance were so kind and gentle. Im trans, and everyone was so so respectful. My nurses RJ and Kayla were amazing. They helped make sure I was comfy and all of my questions were heard and answered. I forgot my EKG girls name, but she was so sweet. Dr Kos was amazing, helped my fiance and I understand every possible thing we needed. I felt so cared for, ive honestly never had such a lovely experience at a hospital. Thank you thank you thank you!

The only positive aspect of my experience tonight was the care I received from the two compassionate nurses, RJ and Matt. They Were absolutely hilarious. The doctor's (Ahsan Waqar, MD) approach was inadequate, dismissive, and lacked empathy. He stated that hernias can supposedly heal on their own or disappear magically, which is inaccurate. I intend to request copies of my imaging from the visit with the confirmed hernia and the one from tonight. (I also have the paperwork from that visit also.) I left without answers regarding my ongoing abdominal pain, elevated blood pressure, (I was 194/122 upon arrival and stayed in the 170s 90% my stay) and heart rates dropping into the 40s and 50s. Despite my dangerously high blood pressure and pain, I was made to go back and wait in the lobby even longer before being called to a room. The response from the doctor after questioning why I wasn't being looked into further and over the hernia statement was, "We look for what you don't have versus what you do," which was unhelpful and dismissive. A friend who was present can verify these details. Overall, it was a disappointing and frustrating experience. A expensive experience for absolutely nothing. Next time, I will go to a different emergency room. Another note: RJ and Matt definitely deserve a raise. They are the best nurses I've ever had. They were gentle, caring, funny, and always check in frequently.
