About Brookdale Geary Street

Brookdale Geary Street in Albany, Oregon offers Assisted Living, Independent Living, and Skilled Nursing/Long Term Care, with a dedicated Memory Care unit. The community serves residents across multiple care levels.

Families offer sharply divided views. Those reporting positive experiences praise attentive staff, a cheerful dining environment, and well-maintained grounds and common areas. One family noted the kitchen delivers "very good meals" with flexible preparation options. Activities, natural lighting, and an open facility layout appear consistently in favorable accounts. However, several families describe serious concerns: inadequate staffing levels leading to neglected hygiene, residents found in soiled conditions, delayed or missed personal care, and a pattern of declining care over time. One family wrote that the facility "should shut it down and start over." The Memory Care unit has faced state oversight; the facility was placed under enhanced supervision in August 2024 following a prior staffing-related closure order.

Brookdale Geary Street holds a 3.5/5 rating across 39 Google reviews, reflecting meaningful inconsistency in resident and family experiences. Prospective residents and families should weigh the positive testimonials against documented staffing and care delivery concerns, particularly within Memory Care.

Brookdale Memory Care is under "ENHANCED"! supervision with the State of Oregon since August of 2024. Five alarm fire here people! Once you run out of self pay money and rely on Medicaid, you are stuck at this facility. Almost all good homes require one year of self pay before you can use Medicaid. Please, please and please consider another place for your loved one. My mother was with this location for two years. Her one bedroom started at $6500 and topped $11,000 near the end of her stay. Her Care Plan increased but the facility never increased her personal care. Email all concerns to the current ED as to keep a paper trail for State investigations for Licensing and Compliance. Also Ombudsman for Long Term Care are a great advocate for your loved one.

Because our family's experience was so bad, I feel compelled to try and prevent others from making rhe same mistake we made.

BEWARE. Anyone thinking of moving into Brookdale Geary Street - or any Brookdale property - should first read the Washington Post article that details dangerous staffing conditions as a result of Brookdale's staffing algorithm. The algorithm leaves facilities perennially short-staffed, which is what we have experienced during our loved one's nearly two years at this facility.

There are wonderful caregivers, servers, cooks, receptionists, and other staff at this facility. Unfortunately, they usually leave within a few months of hire. They must be worn down by a staffing plan that asks them to do more than is humanly possible to provide the care needed by residents. Many days, you will see temp agency staffers roaming the halls, instead of Brookdale employees. Given the complex needs of residents in Assisted Living facilities, having people who know your loved one and know their needs is so important.

In contrast to our appreciation of Brookdale staff, we were consistently frustrated by the rotating door of administrators who provided leadership for the facility . There have been about 7 executive directors or interim directors across two years. These folks would often duck and almost run into their office, rather than talk to residents and loved ones.

Even though the care plan detailed how often our loved one's apartment should be cleaned and how often she would get shower help, it was not unusual to go weeks before services were rendered. We would consistently need to 'fill in' for lack of care, which is very different than the pitch they give you ('Wouldn't you like to go back to being a family member, rather than caregiver?' Why, yes, we would. But Brookdale's inability to deliver on contracted services made this impossible.)

You can search the facility's history with the state of Oregon. They were recently barred from moving in new residents from late April through early September 2024, because they could not pass state inspections.
