Description

Senior Village

TRC Senior Village’s mission is to foster an empowering environment where seniors are active, healthy participants in their own community, achieving their full potential and maximizing their quality of life.

The first development within our village, a HUD Section 202 independent living facility for low-income seniors, opened in September 2010. Located at 346 E 53rd Street in the Washington Park neighborhood, TRC Senior Village 1 is comprised of 70 one-bedroom apartments and one staff unit. Amenities include walk-in closets, call buttons, front desk coverage, storage lockers, on-site laundry facilities, two resident lounges, two community rooms, a computer lab, a fitness room, social activities, and a community garden.

Senior Village 1 is the first phase of the Senior Village project. This project will later include a Grand Family facility and a senior assisted living facility.

The goals of TRC Senior Village are to:

•    Create an attractive and innovative living environment for low-income seniors
•    Support seniors who are primary caregivers of dependents
•    Develop a multi-generational space that invites broader community participation

Our Mission

To promote self-sufficiency through an innovative and comprehensive network of supportive housing, employment, and educational services.

About Us

The Renaissance Collaborative (TRC) is a community-based 501(c)3 social impact organization that has provided affordable housing, workforce development, employment, and educational services and solutions to over 1,000 individuals annually in Bronzeville and its adjacent communities for the past 27 years. To date, TRC has secured employment for approximately 1,200 low-income residents, developed and provided housing for over 400 homeless residents, provided affordable housing for over 120 low-income senior residents, and conducted outreach to over 10,000 residents in low-income communities in many ways, including support groups for seniors and the recovery communities as well as health and employment resource fairs.

Since its inception in 1992, TRC has always put the interests of the people it serves first. Our value statement is: "All individuals have value and they can better contribute to themselves, their families and their communities when provided the support they need." With this value statement guiding all of its decisions, TRC has gained a reputation for excellence in developing creative supportive housing and employment solutions that renew people and build healthier communities.

TRC Founding and History

The Renaissance Collaborative, Inc. (TRC) began as a way to save the Historic Former Wabash YMCA from demolition. In 1992, Patricia Abrams, together with the help of four ecumenical historic churches located in the Bronzeville community of Chicago, came together to save this historic landmark which had been the hub of Black civic and social activity in the early 1900s.

Our Programs

Renaissance Apartments & Fitness for Life Center

101 Permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless adults with additional individualized comprehensive supportive services to increase their income, self-sufficiency and remain housed, including:

Life Skills & Mentoring - Enables residents to succeed in the environments in which they live. Through individualized and group settings, residents are exposed to various tools which assist them with daily living skills. Our topics range from behavioral (communicating effectively with others) or cognitive (making effective decisions); interpersonal (being assertive) or intrapersonal (setting goals).

Health & Wellness - Promotes health and wellness as essentials for an individual’s well-being, development and self-sufficiency. Services are designed to support residents with medication compliance, recovery, nutrition, mental health, vision and dental needs. Residents are counseled both on an individual case-by-case basis and in group settings.

Education & Employment - Enhances the skills and capabilities of participants to reduce unemployment and under-employment in the community. Services include career counseling and job placement assistance, a job club, resume & cover letter development, effective career search strategy development, career assessment, social media security, referrals for training, and a transitional jobs program.
