At Montgomery Place, our vision has always been to provide seniors with a welcoming, comfortable, and enriching place to call home. Here, our residents, their families, and our staff are all integral parts of our caring and compassionate community.

For more than three decades, Montgomery Place has been counted among the best senior living communities in Chicago. Located in the heart of Hyde Park, our lakeside community serves as a beautiful setting for residents to make memories, build lasting friendships, and experience the best of life.

Our Mission, Vision, and Values

At the heart of the Montgomery Place mission is a dedication to enhancing the quality of life of every member of our diverse and inclusive community. Here, our five core values serve as our guiding force: integrity, dignity, engagement, caring, and quality. With a firm belief that the wonders of the city of Chicago can uniquely contribute to the health and healing of the mind, body, and spirit, Montgomery Place takes great pride in making a difference in the lives of our residents and the community as a whole.

Why Seniors Prefer Senior Living

Today's modern senior living communities offer a wide range of benefits, serving as a wonderful place for seniors to enjoy a full and happy life. In an independent or assisted living community, seniors are provided with many opportunities for social interaction, enrichment, and more, encouraging a productive lifestyle that supports both their physical and mental well-being.

Here are just a few of the reasons that a senior living community could be an excellent choice for your loved one:

Safety and security

For many seniors and their loved ones, one of the biggest benefits of assisted living or independent living is the focus on health and safety. Both their advanced age and living alone can put a senior at risk for accidents, injuries, medical emergencies, disasters, and even crime.

However, in a senior community, safety and security is typically a top priority. The communities are designed with seniors in mind, incorporating accessibility and mobility features, medical alert systems, added security, medical staff, and more.

Social interaction

As we age, making meaningful social connections can often be difficult, and loneliness for seniors is a common cause of depression and other serious issues. Even with friends and family nearby, seniors can begin to feel isolated in their homes.

In an assisted living facility or independent living community, seniors can stay socially engaged with a variety of activities. Communal meals, art and music classes, group outings, fitness sessions, happy hours, and other social events provide the social interaction that is so vital to age happily.

Stress-free living

For many seniors, living independently is a burden that comes with worries of home repairs, housekeeping, laundry, and transportation. Even daily tasks and personal care can become frustrating, making day-to-day extremely difficult.

At an assisted or independent living community, there is a support staff there to provide peace of mind in every way. From everyday chores and property maintenance to grocery shopping and personal care routines, it can all be left to a professional giving your senior loved one more time to enjoy the present.

Lakefront Living

In Chicago, lakefront living has always had an enviable cachet a distinction that certainly extends to Montgomery Place.

Barely 500 feet to the east, the natural beauty of Lake Michigan frames South Shore Drive, your express route to downtown Chicago's cultural gems and commercial attractions. To the west lies the nearby University of Chicago, a stellar hub for the arts and sciences, where many Montgomery Place residents have deep roots, whether as alumni or emeritus faculty and staff.

The university's campus extends to include UChicago Medicine, which includes the University of Chicago Hospital, as well as the Pritzker School of Medicine. Not incidentally, the university's scientific breakthroughs have garnered nearly a dozen Nobel Prizes. In addition to the University of Chicago, the historic neighborhood of Hyde Park site of not one but two World's Fairs also is the proposed site for the Barack Obama Presidential Center.

But Hyde Park is more than a collection of university and medical center, museums and concerts. It is a compact and richly woven community, easy to navigate on foot or by car, with a burgeoning restaurant scene and a bevy of bookstores among its architectural mix of modernism and celebrated neo-Gothic construction. One of Chicago's classic neighborhoods, Hyde Park fully embraces Montgomery Place and vice versa.

Misson

At Montgomery Place, our mission is to enhance the quality of life for those who choose to live here to support each person's social, intellectual, physical, cognitive and spiritual needs. By staying true to that mission, we have succeeded in building one of Chicago's most diverse, inclusive communities of people who are 62 and older.

Our Vision grounded in values and heritage

Any successful endeavor must balance the daily necessities with a clear and consistent vision. After nearly 30 years, our vision still makes it possible for Montgomery Place to proudly maintain its standing among the Chicago metropolitan area's preeminent senior living communities.

As a not-for-profit organization, we gladly extend our expertise and talents not only to our residential neighborhood but also to the community beyond Hyde Park. Our vision is grounded in the belief that mind, body and spirit can work in harmony with the joys and wonders found in one of the world's most vital and influential cities.

At Montgomery Place, our vision derives from five core values; they provide a guide for service and a goal we hope to meet each day.

Our commitment to integrity binds us to conduct all business from front-desk encounters to fiscal responsibility with transparency and candor. Our emphasis on integrity underscores the emphasis we place on the dignity with which we strive to treat everyone in the Montgomery Place family: our employees as well as our residents, their families and friends.

Those values allow us to prioritize engagement with the entire Montgomery Place community, as we collaborate, define and refine the inclusive culture and ethos of our shared home. Engagement arises from and in turn helps nourish the spirit of caring, which is at the root of all our efforts. And caring inspires us to perform at the highest levels of excellence in all things a measure of the degree of quality that helps us implement our overall vision.

These values explain and ensure Montgomery Place's continued success.

Montgomery Place grew from seeds of kindness planted more than 125 years ago, when Rev. Walter Delafield came to the aid of three elderly women in his Episcopalian parish in Hyde Park. In 1888, he learned the women needed a place to live that could accommodate caregivers when they were needed. So Rev. Delafield rented a home on South Ellis Avenue for them; others followed, and in 1915, what had become The Church Home organization constructed its first residential building, for 80 adults, at 5445 South Ingleside Avenue.

In the 1980s, The Church Home purchased our current property at 5550 South Shore Drive for $3 million and began construction for a new retirement community named for the late retired Episcopal Bishop James W. Montgomery. We began welcoming residents in October 1991.
