Is independent living the right choice for you?

When considering senior living community options for yourself or a loved one, how do you know if independent living is the right choice? First, it’s important to point out that independent living communities are not the same as the typical 55+ active adult community. Those communities generally do not offer the type of services found at independent living communities. What’s more, the residents at 55+ active adult communities tend to be in their 60s or 70s.

In contrast, residents who call independent living communities home tend to be in their late 70s and 80s. And specific services like meal plans, housekeeping and transportation are part of the monthly rent. To put it another way, Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School says “Independent living is for people who can take care of themselves, but want the convenience of someone else to do the cooking and cleaning. Those services are provided. Residents live in private apartments or condos, usually without someone to check on them or provide nursing care.”

Our independent, or senior, living community in Tucson was designed for dynamic individuals who want an active lifestyle with the freedom to pursue their interests on their terms. Whether that’s volunteering, perfecting a favorite hobby or sport, taking on new challenges or spending more time with family and friends, the choice is yours. And our caring, friendly staff are here to help you achieve your ideal retirement.

Assisted Living

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living offers a higher level of care than what is available at independent living communities. The National Institute on Aging says, “Assisted living is for people who need help with daily care, but not as much help as a nursing home provides.” For example, individuals may need help with things like dressing, bathing, taking their medicines, and cleaning. But they do not need the attentive medical care that a nursing home provides. That means assisted living allows residents to live more independently.

Generally, assisted living residents have their own apartment along with access to many services. At Fellowship Square Tucson, our assisted living facility is called The Oasis; it provides three meals a day in a full-service dining room and certified caregivers on staff 24 hours a day. Each resident wears an emergency call button which, when activated, alerts the caregivers that the resident needs help.

Choosing an Assisted Living Community

When looking for a senior living community for yourself or a loved one, there are many options including assisted living. How do you know what’s best? We suggest starting by asking a few questions to help identify what’s important to the person making the move.

•    What services do you need?
•    Where do you want to live?
•    Do you want to be near family and friends?
•    What amenities and activities do you want?
•    What is your budget?

For some, this can seem overwhelming. But our friendly staff and certified caregivers are always happy to answer any questions and give you the guidance you need to find what’s best for you.

When is the right time to make the move?

Choosing to move to an assisted living community and finding the right one can take time. So it's a good idea to start your research as soon as possible. It may even help to begin looking well before you need to make the transition. Do research online, make phone calls, and arrange a safe in-person tour of your top picks.

Even though the assisted living community might be the best decision for everyone involved, many people find it difficult to talk about and simply opt to not address it. That’s understandable, but putting it off can make it that much harder later. It’s a complex situation that many people need help with, as well as time to adjust to the idea of having to ask for help.

There are some clear signs that might indicate it’s time to make the move to assisted living. Elaine K. Howley for U.S. News and World Report says signs may include:

•    A worsening of medical conditions
•    An increased number of falls and overall increased frailty
•    Difficulty managing domestic finances or other money problems
•    Difficulty keeping the house clean
•    A decline in ability to care for oneself
•    Depression or social isolation.

For the senior making the transition, and the family, this can be an emotional time. To help facilitate the conversation, consider talking to the family doctor, financial advisor or attorney for professional insights, suggestions and anecdotes of how others prepared for and handled the move.0
