About The Highlands

The Highlands is an independent living community in Topsham, Maine, serving approximately 500 residents across cottages, homes, and lodge apartments. The community is operated by Grace Management and offers a range of housing options, from single-floor cottages with heated garages to apartment-style living.

Residents and families consistently praise the attentiveness of staff and leadership, noting that administrators like the Executive Director reach out personally to check on residents' wellbeing. The physical environment draws repeated mention, manicured grounds, peaceful walking trails, a pool and gym, and well-maintained facilities. Practical comforts matter here too: housekeeping every two weeks, yard work handled professionally, and dining that removes the daily "what's for dinner" question. One family wrote, "staff worked to do the impossible, make everyone happy."

The community earned particular recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic for proactive communication, on-site vaccination clinics coordinated with CVS, and consistent attention to resident safety and morale. Long-term residents speak to a genuine sense of belonging, mentioning strong peer relationships and governance opportunities that let residents shape community life.

Very pleased with the facility. Met all the criteria we were looking for to find a good home for my mother. Rebecca was absolutely wonderful to work with as was Adam!

I was told she could move in memory care but then had to be tested, then the test date was changed and then they couldn't take her said she doesn't take her medication. That was a lie. They said I even said that and I did not. She took her medication. They said they were particular in choosing their residents. Isn't a person upset when they move from a big beautiful house into a cracker box?, somewhere else? I think that they only wanted quiet people who didn't talk, walk or need help in anyway. It is expected to be upset until you get use to new surroundings. I didn't get a good feel about Amy, the intake person. She wasn't reassuring or friendly nor did she return my messsges. I wouldn't recommend The Highlands to anyone. They were not nice.
