About Tamarisk NorthShore

Tamarisk NorthShore is an independent living community in Deerfield, Illinois, offering apartment-style residences with on-site dining and organized activities and outings for residents.

Families give mixed but notably candid feedback. Several reviewers praise the physical environment—described as beautiful and stylish—along with the friendliness of staff and quality of dining experiences. One parent who initially felt apprehensive now calls it "the perfect place." However, multiple families note significant changes since a management transition away from previous operators. Two separate reviews highlight staff departures, including transportation drivers, and mention a shift in the community's "warmth and creativity" and overall "feel and energy." One family observed that while some long-standing programs remain, the leadership character has noticeably altered.

The community holds a 4.1-star rating across 22 Google reviews, with strong five-star endorsements balanced against concerns about management and staffing stability that several families attribute to recent organizational changes.

My mother-in-law lives at Tamarisk, and there have been noticeable changes over the past few years. Several excellent staff members have left, including a terrific driver who recently departed, reportedly due to management issues. Since it is no longer run by CJE, the overall feel and energy of the staff has shifted. There are still a number of long standing programs created by the former Activities Director, (whom we all adored), but very little has been added. For residents who have been there a while, it has started to feel repetitive.… “Groundhog Day,” as my mother-in-law describes it. The current Activities Director seems disengaged and simply going through the motions, which affects both staff and resident experience. It has also been difficult to communicate with management. Concerns don’t seem to be heard or addressed, and with ownership based out of state, there’s a sense they are out of touch with what’s happening day to day. It’s completely understood that many residents use walkers or wheelchairs. My MIL does as well. That’s not the issue. The concern is that some newer residents seem extremely confused and need more consistent support and guidance than what an independent living setting is designed to provide, which changes the overall environment. Tamarisk is a beautiful place with a lot of potential, but it needs leadership that is more invested in the residents and the community.

My Aunt has lived here for about 7 years. This feedback is coming from her and what I have witnessed. Tamarisk used to be great when managed by CJE. It’s beautiful and the apartments are very nice, but since the new management and new activities director took over, it has gone downhill. The leadership is missing the warmth and creativity it once had. The bus drivers both left and transportation is terrible or non existent Don’t expect to be able to schedule rides. If your relative lives there, plan on taking them to appointments yourself. Much of the front desk staff has also left, since the new management came along. Tamarisk is supposed to be independent living, but anyone can move in. I’m not sure if this is typical of all independent living communities, but there are a ton of caregivers, walkers and wheelchairs. I understand if a current resident needs to get a device, but I’m surprised with the help the new people need when they move in. Does not seem independent. This seems to be a big complaint I hear when I’m there. My aunt has friends and the residents are very nice. The issue is poor leadership. UPDATE: I’m honestly surprised to see the Executive Director make the comment below in writing that contradicts what residents were previously told and a factual claim. The letter I quote went out to all of the residents regarding a driver who was very well-liked and whose departure was attributed to concerns with leadership. Now, we’re being told by you, Colleen, that no one has left, which raises questions and creates confusion. Colleen, I would like to meet with you directly to discuss this further. I may also have my Aunt bring this up at today’s town hall, as transparency with residents is important and this situation doesn’t feel clear. Because of this lie, I lowered my star rating. I’m shocked by the response. “ Dear Resident, It is with mixed emotions that we share that (JG) , our transportation driver, has made the decision to resign from his position with Tamarisk NorthShore. We are truly grateful and appreciative of his time and dedication to each of us over the years. While we will miss him, his kind heart and warm smile, we are excited for him as he begins this next chapter and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. We will be interviewing new candidates for the transportation driver immediately and are looking forward to new opportunities and amenities as we move forward Thank you for your ongoing support. Sincerely, Colleen Kowalewski Executive Director”

This was the perfect choice for my parents. It’s warm and stylish with well thought out programming. The restaurant is thoughtfully designed with delicious food, and most importantly, the staff is attentive and kind. My parents were apprehensive and now say it’s the perfect place for them. We are so grateful.

We absolutely LOVE Tamarisk for our dad. He is super happy living there, and enjoys so many of the activities and outings. He always says how great it is, and that he's made so many friends. My other family members and I are all so grateful that we found Tamarisk for dad. He usually refers to it as "Marvelous"! When we visit him, we see how friendly everyone is, and how wonderful the staff is too. Living there is a truly positive experience for him and he is 96! Thank you to all who work there!
