I recently visited my mother after quite some time and learned that there was a new director. She was extremely kind, and watching her chat so warmly and cheerfully with my mother gave me great peace of mind. Everyone on the staff was friendly and caring. Thank you very much.

My mother had been staying here since the start of the covid pandemic for 4-5 years. We chose this place as this was one of the few assisted living facilities for the elderly who are Korean speaking, offer Korean food, and have Korean speaking staff. Although not the best place, it was the best we could find for my mother. The last year of her stay was terrible. The staff stopped doing range of motion exercises. As a result, she developed lower extremity contracture and contracture related pain, making her mobility and care even more difficult. The worst was during her last months of life. She got covid in mid January from someone there, which in retrospect was not surprising since no one masks there anymore. Then about a few weeks ago, she got sick again, so she got sent to the hospital for treatment and later, transferred to rehab. Unfortunately, she died while in rehab. When I texted Steve, the director at Sunny Hills to inform him of my mother's death, all he did was text me back "Oh my God". He did not follow up with any condolences texts or calls. My subsequent texts were to inform him of the plans to remove our mother's belonging. He did not acknowledge any type of response, but instead avoided any communication with me. When we came to pick up our mother's belonging, there was already another elderly resident in my mother's room who was male. No warning about someone else in the room. For all the money, my family and I spent on this place and the type of facility that it is, I expected a lot better care and communication. I noticed a significant deterioration of care by the staff just before Susan left and after Steve took over as the director. I thought about calling Steve direct, but given that he didn't respond by text, I suspect he would have avoided any calls from me. For anyone thinking of putting their elderly family member in Sunny Hills, I would not recommend this place. Better to put them in a real nursing home facility, hire a full time home health care person, or look at places in Orange County since LA surprisingly doesn't have much choice even in K-Town for those with Korean elderly family. If I was an elderly person and looking for places to stay, given the choice of Sunny Hills verses a quick death from a heart attack or stroke, I would choose the quick death.
