I saw the most amazing dr in ER tonight. I cant say enough about him.. he truly cares about patients and that's evident. not all heros wear capes, some wear doctors gowns. And the nurse was top notch also. Thank you for excellent care close to home.

My 2-year-old daughter was seen at Gundersen St. Elizabeth’s in Wabasha multiple times over the course of a year and was diagnosed with pneumonia three separate times. She was even hospitalized there for two days. Looking back now after everything we’ve learned at Mayo Clinic, I can’t help but wonder how none of those visits ever led to anyone mentioning that her heart appeared enlarged or that she had a heart murmur.<br><br>Mayo has since diagnosed my daughter with a large congenital heart defect that has caused severe enlargement of the right side of her heart and requires open-heart surgery. Her right heart has enlarged to three times the limit of normal for a child her age, and Mayo also documented a loud heart murmur that can be heard with the stethoscope barely touching her chest. During one of her visits to Gundersen, her heart rate reached above 200 beats per minute. Over the past year, she had numerous chest X-rays at Gundersen, and countless doctors and nurses listened to her heart with a stethoscope, yet an enlarged heart or heart murmur was never mentioned to us.<br><br>The emergency room experience during her hospitalization in February was especially difficult. The ER nurse, Michelle, made me feel like my concerns as a mother weren’t being taken seriously. I brought my daughter in because she was struggling to breathe, and I was told she “seems fine.” Because I had recently been diagnosed with strep throat, I was told she probably just had strep too and was advised that next time I should use urgent care instead of the emergency room. When I became concerned about her oxygen readings, I was told she’s fine and that the monitor likely wasn’t reading correctly because her fingers were so small.<br><br>She ended up being admitted to the hospital for two days because her oxygen levels repeatedly dropped into the 80s.<br><br>Another part of our hospitalization that was very frustrating involved something as basic as meals. I was told that because my daughter was only two years old, I was not allowed to leave her room or the floor and needed to stay with her at all times. I completely understood and respected that. What I didn’t understand was that meal trays were only being delivered for my daughter. No one ever asked if I needed food, despite expecting me to remain at the hospital with her around the clock. It wasn’t until I mentioned this to a family member who works there, and they spoke with their supervisor, that I finally began receiving meal trays as well. That should have been standard without needing to rely on a personal connection.<br><br>As a mother, that experience left me questioning myself. I knew something wasn’t right with my daughter, but after those conversations I actually found myself wondering if I was overreacting. Because of the ER nurse Michelle’s repeated comments, I even found myself wondering if I had Munchausen syndrome by proxy because I was repeatedly made to feel like I was imagining my daughter’s symptoms. Looking back now, knowing she has a severe congenital heart defect requiring open-heart surgery, those interactions have stayed with me.<br><br>I do want to recognize one person who made a lasting positive impression: Katherine, the head nurse who cared for my daughter during her hospitalization. She was absolutely incredible. She was kind, compassionate, attentive, and treated both my daughter and our family with genuine care. She is the reason this review isn’t one star.<br><br>I truly hope my family’s experience encourages providers to listen closely when parents tell you something isn’t right. Parents know their children better than anyone, and feeling heard can make all the difference.

This clinic is very calm in comparison to Winona or LaCrosse. It's reflected in the time and attention you receive. I have been displaced with providers coming and going at the Winona Campus. I found Amy Johnson (incredible provider) but she was sadly deployed to military duty. I came to Wabasha with a lot of anxiety and some mixed feelings from feeling unheard and unseen with other providers in the area.<br><br>Dr. Laura Lara is a breath of fresh air after experiencing what I have...she would be regardless if I'm honest. I was sharing a room with her...not her and an ego. She met me where I am at and that motivates me to make some necessary changes! She explained things thoroughly and truly listened to me, respecting me as an individual. She left the room and my partner looked at me and said, "You found the right one!" He is correct and I feel so much lighter. It's been very emotional up until now. It's a very big deal.<br><br>I'm looking forward to entrusting her and this clinic with my care. No situation is ever perfect, but compassion and empathy are very present here and that's the strong base I was looking for.<br><br>The staff is amazing as well! I didn't clock their name, but a shout out to the individual who roomed me (they are a dance coach outside of Gundersen) because they set an amazing tone...very friendly. The phlebotomist and check-out person were also incredible. If you have any level of anxiety around healthcare...this is the setting and they are the staff.

Arrived via ER had Excellent care and true concern for my husband’s health. Had to transfer upstairs in hospital for care. Then transferred to different level of care. We are genuinely blessed knowing this facility is in our town. Thank you staff at St Elizabeth’s !
