About Abe’s Garden Community

Abe's Garden Community is a Nashville-based senior lifestyle community and home care provider that emphasizes evidence-based approaches to mind and body health. The organization delivers person-directed care wherever a resident or program participant lives, meeting individuals and families at their point of need on their care journey.

The community's programs are built on decades of research in senior engagement and wellness best practices, which are incorporated into daily life across all of its care models. Abe's Garden Community also merged with the Education and Advisory Division of the Hearthstone Institute, a memory care and engagement consultancy, allowing it to train other senior living providers on brain health and memory support while offering caregiving education and engagement tools to families navigating dementia.

Abe's Garden Community offers a wellness-focused standard of living in its physical surroundings, along with personalized support intended to promote dignity, health, and fulfillment for residents. It operates as a residential center of excellence for those living with dementia, and also runs a membership program for individuals living with dementia at home who benefit from best-practice engagement programs. A specialized small group is available for people with early-stage dementia, focused on peer support, learning, and socialization.

The community recently completed a capital campaign and expansion, which opened and quickly reached full occupancy. A celebration event marking the completed expansion included the new Cal Turner Community Room, drawing more than 200 attendees who support the organization's mission.

Abe's Garden Community was founded in honor of Abram "Abe" Shmerling, MD, whose Alzheimer's diagnosis led his family to recognize the need for a memory care community focused on improving the quality of dementia care. Abe remains the inspiration behind the organization's ongoing work to expand its brain health approach to reach more seniors both on and off its campus. Abe's Garden Community operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

My husband has participated in The Club (Daytime Memory Care Program) for almost 3 years now, and to say it has enriched both of our lives would be a huge understatement. I have such peace dropping him off 3 days a week from 9-3, knowing he is enjoying interacting with other members as well as being stimulated by the variety of activities chosen by their well-trained staff. And on the flip side this gives me 18 hours a week to take care of our tasks of daily living and to take care of myself, so he has a much better caretaker (me)!!

Abe's Garden is such an asset to the greater Nashville community! Everyone is so thoughtful and caring, and there's a real focus on making each day meaningful for the residents. It's a place that truly leads with compassion.

I cannot recommend Abe's Garden Community highly enough. When we were looking for a memory care home for my Mom, we visited several places that felt more like upscale hotels—beautiful but cold, sterile, and impersonal. From the moment we walked into Abe's Garden Community, it was completely different. It felt like stepping into a caring, loving home
rather than an institution.

The staff here are truly exceptional. They don’t just provide care—they genuinely know and love the residents. They remember small details about my Mom’s life - her favorite flowers, the stories she loves to tell, and what makes her smile. The caregivers treat every resident with such kindness, patience, and dignity. You can see the compassion in how they interact, especially with those living with memory challenges. They’re not just doing a job; they’re building real relationships.

The environment itself is warm and comforting. There are cozy gathering spaces, beautiful natural light, and personal touches that make it feel like a real home.

The memory care unit is thoughtfully designed with plenty of gentle stimulation, familiar activities, and safe spaces for wandering. My Mom has settled in beautifully and seems more content and peaceful than she has in a long time.

Thank You Abe's Garden Community!

Finally a community that is a home and pays attention to the needs of your loved one. Highly recommend Abes Garden for residential care, in home care, or adult day services. The people and the training make the difference!

The facilities are excellent, but the real star of the show are the caring and attentive staff. They make all the difference in not only the lives of the residents, but the family and friends of the residents as well.
