Went to visit a friend. It's a very spacious and well maintained campus but not as many residents as I remember seeing on a visit to see another family friend almost a decade ago. Or perhaps it was simply a different time of day. At the main entrance is an inscription in marble that reminds viewers that veterans are responsible for the many freedoms we enjoy, and as we entered the building we were met with the American flag and the various flags of the military divisions. Could not help but feel a strong sense of pride. The staff member who met us, Nurse Catherine, was very welcoming and the building was shining from floor to ceiling. The air was cool and fresh in every corridor through which I passed. That has to be a high standard to reach, but reach it they have done! Because we had to get off the highway before dark, we weren't going to stay long, so we visited in the room. Of course, visitors are allowed to sit and visit with vets in the large common area in front of the nurses station. It is a large square area the vets share to talk, watch television, or play games. However, as I walked through the hallways, I noticed several rooms of various sizes that also serve as visiting areas. And I even saw a quiet room where the veterans can go to decompress. Perfect! When we entered our friend was finishing the last portions of lima beans and cornbread. The meat was long gone. And it appeared to taste as good as it looked. I could see he was enjoying it! Yep! Good food is always a bonus! It was a nice visit. Our friend appeared to be healthy and happy. He was well-groomed as usual and the physical therapy he was receiving was showing signs of success. As we left, we were greeted by a CNA who showed us the way out. We did not pass a staff person, who no matter what they were doing, didn't smile and say hello. I am told the staff consists overwhelmingly of either veterans or the spouses of veterans. And to them and to the veterans they support through their jobs, I salute and say thank you!

Family needs to watch over their love ones carefully. They allowed a relative toe nails grow to the back of his toes. When he passed away, they had "lost" his motorized chair. Some of his other items disappeared as well. No way to treat the ones that fought for us.

The Director and those that are in charge of the daily operations of this facility need to get out of their offices and walk the floors and inspect what they expect. Taking your two dogs to work and caring for them in your office appears to be more important than the Residents. It doesn’t take much to fix what is very broken in this facility. Perhaps walk into the rooms to look at the condition. The outside appearance of the NE La Veterans Home is very nice, the inside of the facility is also nice. However, the care is below par! Our Veterans deserve better!! Please do better!!

WARNING DISTURBING CONTENT: I am speaking out after much controversy and now being BANNED from seeing my Grandfather because I reported on LIVE AND DEAD ants in his drinking water, left soiled and in dirty clothes, not bathed, not getting the medical attention when he needs it and I could go on and on. However I have videos, pictures and phone conversations proving horrendous treatment to our Veteran’s. I initially emailed the Louisiana Dept of Veteran’s Affairs and went straight up the chain. After the Director of the home was looked into by Baton Rouge I mysteriously hear from my uncle, the curator of the estate to whom I have only seen at the home twice in over 10 years, banned me from seeing my grandfather with threat of arrest. Please help me expose this facility for what it is...an utter disgrace.

Although I believe the majority of staff is caring, the turnover is so high, the training is poor and the oversight is so lax that the result is poor care and many mistakes and omissions. My mother was there for 2 months from April 2018. From day one, there were problems. 1) She was admitted into a dirty room (the former occupant's teeth were still in the dirty medicine cabinet). And, this was an isolation room so should have been cleaned and sanitized more so than regular rooms. The next room she went into was dirty as well. 2)The afternoon that she was admitted, I was told they had all of the medications she was taking on hand and we went over them individually to make sure but I was called at 10pm that night because they didn't and I drove back to the facility in order for her to get them. It was almost midnight by the time she received her meds. 3) This is minor but, Initially, she and I both had problems finding her room. All of the halls are almost identical so it is very confusing for the residents. Painting the walls in different colors for each wing would be a very simple solution. They do have a Roman numeral over the entrance to each wing but it is high up over the entrance and most residents are stooped or in wheelchairs or walkers so it isn't easy for them to see. 4)Since no one put her name on her room door, twice other (male) residents went into her room..once in her bed. After a month, I put a hand made sign on the door. 5) Care plan meetings with family included are mandated after admittance yet she did not have one until I complained almost 3 weeks after she was admitted. 6) We had to ask for pest control twice for roaches. 7)Since there are very few female residents, so she had to schedule showers in the communal shower, which is reasonable. But, there is no sign on the door or other method to notify other residents so a male walked in on her. (doors can't be locked for safety concerns) but a sign on the two doors would solve it. 8) Once, I saw another wheelchair bound resident in the hallway within sight of the nurses station. He was leaning dangerously to the side. I told an aide but nothing was done until he fell out of his chair. There were other problems that I saw but they didn't happen to us so I don't feel I should comment. Many times they were short staffed, especially on weekends. At one point there was only one RN for twice the number of patients mandated. Mom had the beginning of bed sores and I believe they worsened at one point when I was out of town because they weren't attended to as I believe the RN was so overworked. As soon as she got proper care they began to resolve. I asked if a physician could see her to order wound care but he is only scheduled to come on certain days. Because of all the mistakes, I filed a formal grievance which has to be submitted to the state and investigated within 5 days. After almost 3 weeks, I asked about the progress and was told that the situations had been addressed but I could get no written confirmation and I truly believe that the complaint was never submitted to the state or was done retroactively. I really did feel like the aids and PT staff were caring and did their job as far as they were trained but overall, it was a bad experience. I feel like I had to constantly ask for information and updates. I feel like residents that don't have relatives or friends that advocate for them would get inadequate care.
