My mother has been a resident at Maple Springs for nearly 2 years after breaking her hip. During that time we have been fortunate to have Lynda McCarthy RN overseeing her care as the Director of Nursing. As a retired physician, my expectations are high for my mother's care. Lynda McCarthy has been exceptional in every way - she really cares. She helped us connect with medical providers who visit residents regularly, any problems with getting labs or medication changes, Lynda says "I'll handle it" and it always gets done even though she is incredibly busy. The facility really needs 2 Lyndas to cover that may folks. Actually the facility needs more workers in general and that is why I give the facility 3 stars but Lynda 5. I hope she is appreciated by management like she is by residents.

My mother was one of the earliest residents at Maple Springs in Anchorage so I can speak to things at Maple Springs over a long time line. It is also worthwhile to explain that Maple Springs in Anchorage has what I would call the traditional side and the memory care side. I cannot speak to memory care "Lighthouse" as my mother was not there.<br><br>Long term elder care is inherently a challenging situation and loaded with emotion so it is not surprising to see 1 star versus 5 star reviews<br><br>1. Overall the staff at Maple Springs IS interested in the care of the residents and they DO try to provide a good level of care.<br>2. With that said, like caring for any individual there are going to be mis-steps so I like to look at the overall balance of care on the long term. Over our entire experience the care was very good and the concern showed by the staff was very good.<br>3. I would say the biggest discrepancy that would happen or that causes disagreements is that the staff seeing issues almost daily WOULD eventually take care of concerns but as the son or daughter of someone that needs care we expect or want things to be addressed immediately but I am not sure that is a realistic expectation but I never saw an issue that once realized and brought to their attention wasn't eventually dealt with.<br>4. I felt that Lynda the head of nursing was very transparent and once we learned a communication style that focused on direct and respectful communication things went very well and she was not afraid to admit when mistakes were made and at the same time was not afraid to tell me when expectations I had may not be realistic and we were then able to come up with new or different solutions. She is wonderful and totally professional.<br>5. BE INVOLVED as much as you can... we had the amazing advantage of being there quite often and GET TO KNOW THE STAFF AND CAREGIVERS as that relationship I think really helps build trust in them and helps with communication.<br><br>I think in general long term care is a tough situation so even the best option still isn't necessarily a great situation but from the options I was able to research in Anchorage I believe Maple Springs to be one of the best.

Maps will direct you to take the third exit of the traffic circle, which will lead to a dog park. It is technically right behind the building, but there is no road to get to it from there. You have to take the second exit from the traffic circle, which will take you to the front of the building and parking lot.

This place is horrible. First off, zero safety protocol. I don’t know how it’s supposed to be but most times when I visited my mother no one was at the front desk checking to see who was coming and going. I could have been anyone and have gone into anyone’s room without being asked. On multiple occasions we found our mother clearly neglected and terribly unhappy. She would never say it out loud but we knew in her eyes that she was being mistreated. My sister walked in on a caregiver handling our mother VERY roughly (short woman, long sandy hair and big glasses) and it was completely heart wrenching to see the sadness in our mothers face because of the situation she was in, and unfortunately we could not get out of there in time. She passed after getting an infection there. Most times I would visit her, she would be laying in filth and had been for a long time. The night before she passed, a nurse in a VERY care free way asked if they should send her to the hospital after they noticed her acting strange for an entire day, almost finding it amusing to her as she was somewhat giggling while telling me. We have zero medical background and we knew it was an infection. After telling them to get to the ER asap, I got a call way later saying they were just getting her out of there. The next day we lost our mother. This place is a third rate care facility with a first rate mask on. Do not be fooled, and if you have other options, I urge you to explore them before settling on this place.
