Amy,
Your invaluable assistance was critical in resolving a dire situation for my elderly family members. I am deeply grateful for your swift action, which truly saved the day.
For context, I recently learned that my elderly relatives, whom I’ll refer to as Jack and Jill, were at risk of being left in an unsafe home environment. I flew from my home in Arizona to West Virginia to address their urgent needs. Through this experience, I discovered the significant challenges within the elder care system, including understaffing and inadequate resources. For instance, I was shocked to learn that Adult Protective Services in Wheeling employs only one investigator to cover three counties, leaving them overwhelmed with cases and limited capacity to assist.
Jill, who has dementia, had been reliant on Jack as her primary caregiver. Unbeknownst to me, Jack was hospitalized weeks prior and subsequently transferred to a care facility in Ohio, leaving Jill alone at home for an extended period. Neighbors kindly stepped in to assist Jill with daily activities until they were able to contact me.
Upon learning of Jack’s situation, I was informed by the Ohio care facility’s social services team that he would be discharged the following day due to exhausted medical insurance coverage. Despite Jack’s inability to walk and his numerous health conditions, as well as Jill’s dementia and inability to care for him, the facility planned to send him home in a taxi, fully aware that this would place both in an unsafe environment. I was told that for Medicaid assistance, Jack needed to return to West Virginia, just across the Ohio River.
Frantic to find a solution, I made numerous calls but initially found little help. A relative suggested contacting Family Services, where I left a desperate voicemail for you, Amy. To my relief, you returned my call within minutes and promptly connected with Samantha at the Moundsville Care Facility to explain the situation.
Shortly after our conversation, Samantha reached out, and together with Alice, Dawn, Tiffany, and the Moundsville staff, they acted swiftly to ensure Jack and Jill were placed in a safe environment. It became clear that Jack’s health had deteriorated significantly, rendering him unable to care for himself or Jill.
I cannot thank you, Amy, the Moundsville Care Facility staff, and Tiffany enough for your compassion and dedication. Your efforts provided Jack and Jill with the care and safety they urgently needed. While there is more to this story, I have returned to Arizona and am attending to other responsibilities.
Your work in supporting the elderly is profoundly appreciated. Thank you, and may you continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
Sincerely,
Bill and Cathie

A wonder place and staff. My mom loves to talk to her meal delivery driver and looks forward to him coming. They bring extras all the time which is much appreciated.
