About Elder Ashram

Elder Ashram is an assisted living and memory care community located in Oakland, California, offering daily living assistance and specialized dementia care for seniors. The community serves individuals with varying care needs, from those requiring periodic support due to aging or illness to those needing ongoing assistance with activities of daily living.

The community provides individualized care plans tailored to each resident's specific needs rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Daily services include meal preparation, hygiene assistance, cleaning, mobility support, and supervision. Staff emphasize developing personal relationships with residents through one-on-one attention and compassionate caregiving, treating companionship as central to the care experience.

Elder Ashram incorporates Ayurveda, an ancient system of health and wellness, into its approach to elder care. The community uses Ayurvedic principles including dietary choices, natural medicines, and lifestyle modifications to support residents' physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This approach extends beyond maintaining health status to actively enhancing quality of life and personal growth during the aging process.

The community also operates the Eldership Academy Internship Program, which provides training for those interested in learning experiential and humanistic approaches to elder care. Additionally, Elder Ashram partners with a non-profit organization that teaches mindfulness and compassion to caregivers as practical tools for improving well-being and building emotional resilience.

The community is equipped to support residents recovering from surgery or managing age-related conditions such as arthritis, memory loss, dementia, and physical disabilities. Staff are trained to assist with mobility, exercise, grooming, and eating to support residents' independence and quality of life.

There are many great things about the Elder Ashram, but three deserve special recognition. First: the way the programs and activities are structured and the way the building is configured encourage free flow and interaction between quite differently situated residents: those in independent living, those in assisted living, and those in memory care. The residents in memory care are not isolated in a self-contained physical space -- but can move freely (with or without assistance) throughout the sizeable interior of the building and in the large, handsome back garden. And residents at all three levels can and do help and attend to one another -- which is good for everyone -- emotionally and physically. Second: Every semester, 12 interns work with residents and staff to enrich the lives of the residents and to enhance the quality of care of those with physical and mental disabilities. The interns are young adults who are pursuing advanced degrees in relevant fields. They bring fresh energy, curiosity, and their recent education and training into the Ashram, enhancing, uniquely, the quality of life for all residents. Third: The members of the staff at the Ashram who deliver the hands-on, day-to-day service to residents and provide their care are conscientious, kind, careful, and respectful. These positive attributes are shared by the professionals who directly oversee the hands on staff -- the folks in charge of wellness, of organizing and leading walks and outings, and of helping residents and their families and friends navigate their challenging circumstances. The Ashram also is blessed to have an wonderful director of residential engagement, who creatively presents residents every day with a variety of opportunities for learning, achievement and pleasure through crafts, art, music, exercise (primarily in the form of yoga), and special presentations by invited guests (e.g., a recent presentation by a gerontologist about steps residents can take to maximize their health and happiness). It is especially noteworthy that so much art by residents decorates the walls of the Ashram -- adding color and warmth, along with recognition of skills and accomplishments. In sum, there is a lot of good at the Elder Ashram.

Glad to give five stars and a hearty recommendation for Elder Ashram. I have worked as a certified nursing assistant in assisted living facilities as well as had friends and family live in them. I have to say that this is a place of caring for the body, and care of the soul They live up to their good reputation.

Elder Ashram is where love is spoken. For me, it is the heart beat of the neighborhood - I always know the moment I step foot inside the door I am covered in sense of serenity and peace. The building and the grounds and the interior is beautiful. Every single detail. The staff is incredible and helpful. As far as Elder care - every place should take note of how Elders are treated here, with honor and respect. Elder ashram is also a community space, with many events that support the community and bridge the community with the Elders. I have never experienced a finer place that operates on love.

The Elder Ashram is unlike any other assisted living home I have ever seen. It is a sprawling, naturally bright, modern complex with plenty of outdoor space and caring staff. There truly seems to be a focus on both physical and mental assistance for all residents.

The first impression of entering the Elder Ashram is the clean, open spaces. Everything is painted white, and the colorful wall art and numerous plants give warmth to the decor. No chemical smells from synthetic materials in the rugs and furniture. A walk through confirms the peaceful but lively atmosphere, from the long open hallways to the spacious garden space in the back. Residents seem happy as their needs are attended to by the attentive and compassionate staff. Aromas from the tasty food being prepared on the premises fill the air. The Ashram keeps residents engaged in enrichment activities, like music, dance, movement, and art, and this provides social contact as well. Individual apartments are cozy and clean and the residents who occupy them enjoy the privacy of personal space. This is a beautiful residence and the group of people who make the wheels turn are open and welcoming. I would not only feel good about having an elder relative living at the Elder Ashram, I hope that one day I could live in such a place when the time comes. Go and take a tour and see for yourself what's possible in elder care.
