Daniel K. Akaka State Veterans Home

The Daniel Kahikina Akaka State Veterans Home is a 120-bed long-term care facility located in Kapolei, Hawaii, specifically created to serve and support the needs of veterans. As the largest such facility in Hawaii dedicated to veterans, it provides residential care for eligible United States military veterans.

Eligibility for the home requires recognized veteran status with a copy of DD214 documentation. Veterans with a combined 70 percent or higher service-connected disability rating receive VA coverage for the cost of care. Those with less than 70 percent service-connected disability rating are responsible for private pay costs unless eligible for long-term care Medicaid.

The home is named after the late Hawaii Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka, who was born in 1924 and raised in Pauoa Valley on Oahu. As a teenager attending Kamehameha School in 1942, Akaka witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He later served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, and after his military service, he returned to Hawaii to earn degrees in education and pursue a career in teaching and public service. Elected to the U.S. House in 1976 and appointed to the Senate in 1990, he was the first Native Hawaiian and only Chinese American in the Senate, where he championed veterans' rights, expanded GI Bill benefits, and sought recognition for overlooked Asian American and Pacific Islander veterans.
