My father is 87 years old and a veteran. Hens the name Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. A resident since June 4, 2025. I had no idea placing my fathers here that it’s NOT a veterans home but state ran by Pruitt Health. No one in admissions informed me that his VA health benefits could not be used unless he traveled 90 mins to 2 hours during morning commute to VA in DC. We met with a social worker at the community medical VA 2 mins from him and was told the residents at the veterans home could not see doctors there. This is outrageous for these elderly vets to have to be transported to DC. So, my father refuses the commute. Medicare only pays 80%. He has to pay the other 20% physical therapy and any other service he receives at the veterans home. He can’t afford this and I refuse to pay. I will say, the only thing the VA pays is a portion of his residents fee. PH will not submit any accrued medical to the VA for payment. On another note, more funds need to be put towards the food that is served. On many occasions I have sat with my father in cafeteria. The food either is too salty, tastes horrible and looks like it was thrown together. These veterans deserve better. Also, my father is severe diabetic. In the ALF, they do not help with my father’s diet. They have snacks the residents can pick up on their own and 99% it’s not diabetic friendly. I put diabetic ice cream in the hall freezer but that lasted 3 days. They were being stolen. The nurse Sheila at 1D is fantastic and cares about her residents. The aids seem to be nice too. I will be contacting PH and my senators to find out what can be done for my father and the other VA residents. We are blessed he’s 5 mins from my home but I may have to move him yet again when I thought this would be his final residency.

My late father-in-law was at Charlotte Hall. It was too far away and not the best care. The VA can do much better, so I hope they will accept this challenge and make it happen. We need VA facilities that are wonderful in other places besides Charlotte Hall and Baltimore. Charlotte Hall is too far away for many families to visit. Baltimore is not safe. We need a very good facility somewhere near Fort Meade, MD. Even better, we need the VA to help pay for care for veterans who are already in a non-VA private pay only facility, like Brightview. Then the VA won't have to build more facilities all over the place. I have a parent at Brightview Crofton Riverwalk now in Crofton, MD. The VA and Charlotte Hall should very seriously deeply study how they run Brightview because it's excellent care for retirement years. All facilities in the country should study Brightview's methods. I am convinced they are one of the best groups in the nation. They are rated 5 stars on Google maps. Does the VA want private pay only commercial Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care facilities to be better than them? Knowing how competitive the VA is, I'm going to guess the answer is No!

I would think twice before sending your loved one to stay at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. While the staff is generally friendly, the Home leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to cleanliness. This has been a concern over the last five months since my dad moved in. For example, this past weekend I was surprised to find a dead mouse along the wall by my dad’s bed. The previous week, I noticed that the floor had not been cleaned; my shoes were sticking to the floor as I walked around his room. In addition, the linen I removed from his bed for cleaning the week before was placed back on his bed even though the nurse promised to remake his bed with new linen. Furthermore, the bathrooms are unkept. The website states that the MD Veterans Affairs works with the contract staff to ensure a clean and caring environment. If an audit were conducted to assess whether the Home is living up to this standard, the audit would reveal that the Home falls short. In addition, my dad’s mobility has declined shortly after he finished physical therapy. He was given exercises to do on his own, but he needs someone to coach him along and ensure that he is doing the exercises correctly. If residents want to exercise, they must remember to watch an exercise program on tv. Why doesn’t the Home offer group exercise like local Adult Day Care Centers. Furthermore, the events manager led me to believe that she would ensure that my dad would be engaged in activities. However, my dad only attends activities if he remembers, which often he doesn’t. If I don’t call to remind him to attend bingo, he misses it. If I were you, I’d think twice about Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Horrible experience! Wish I could leave 0 stars! This staff does not have humanity. They did not want to provide the care needed for elderly patients with dementia. My grandfather was moved 3+ times for his first few weeks there because the staff did not want to monitor him correctly. They should not advertise memory care if the only care they offer is to place them on a lock down ward. The rooms are set up like jail cells with no offer of comfort or home. Staff is rude when asked normal questions such as why my grandfathers television did not work. So impersonal that they did not even know his name. It was obvious that we annoyed the staff by being present because it seems most people in this home do not have family visiting. Therefore the staff isn’t monitored or requested to do their job!! All in all look other places…. this is not the place to put anyone with a failing memory and have expectations that they will be looked after, cared, and loved. This place comes with a hefty $6000 per month price tag which includes rude staff, dirty rooms/laundry, bed cots, broken television with no remote, loss of all personal items, and a very confused/scared love one! Don’t do it!!

I visited my uncle here a few weeks ago. The security is great! I was so touched when I walked through the doors to see the walls decorated with military emblems, logos and awards. I was so honored to see a structure with a sign that says, "REAL HEROS DON'T WEAR CAPES, THEY WEAR DOG TAGS." This is truth in its highest form! I am proud of our veterans and grateful for Charlotte Hall for caring for our veterans. I had the chance to interact with the staff during my visits with my uncle and they are kind, so helpful and caring. Had some conversations with the residents and they are grateful as well. Thanks Charlotte Hall!
