A Special Shout-Out to Three Amazing Team Members at Carolina Rivers I would like to take a moment to recognize three exceptional women whose dedication, compassion, and professionalism make Carolina Rivers such a special place. Shaun truly loves others well. She brings a sweet, kind, and professional demeanor to everyone she encounters. As she walks the hallways, she is intentional about being present, offering a listening ear, answering questions, providing encouragement, and extending genuine companionship to residents and staff alike. Her compassionate heart and servant spirit make a lasting impact on everyone she meets. Nicolette is a ball of energy and excitement who works tirelessly to create memorable experiences for the residents. She plans and coordinates wonderful events that give everyone something to anticipate and enjoy. The recent prom was a beautiful example of her creativity and dedication, making residents feel special and bringing back cherished memories of their high school days. Susan, Director of Nursing, leads with both excellence and compassion. Her gentle demeanor, coupled with her professionalism, reassures residents and staff that they are truly cared for. She leads with grace, wisdom, and a commitment to quality care that is evident in all she does. Thank you, Shaun, Nicolette, and Susan, for the kindness, joy, and excellence you bring to Carolina Rivers every day. I’ve been visiting this facility regularly for nearly two years, and the transformation over the last 4–5 months has been truly remarkable. While things were not always the best in the past, the new administration has completely turned things around and deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the positive changes that have been made. The staff has created a much more welcoming, caring, and uplifting environment for both residents and families. The nursing staff is consistently kind, attentive, and always willing to help whenever they can. It is very clear that there has been a renewed focus on resident care, morale, and quality of life. I recently visited on Memorial Day and was genuinely amazed to see so many residents outside enjoying a cookout hosted by a large group of Marines and Sailors. The atmosphere was incredible — residents were smiling, socializing, and truly enjoying themselves. The activities department has brought a level of energy and engagement that this facility greatly needed. The improvement from my first visit to now has been night and day. The new administration, activities team, and staff have worked hard to make this a wonderful place for residents and their families. It’s refreshing to see such meaningful positive change, and I can confidently say this facility is moving in an excellent direction.

As many have said, there are some staff members who do care about the residents. I know they are doing what they can with the limited resources that they have. However, there are some things that are just not acceptable. My father was in here for 6 or so weeks. He rarely had success with the call bell or it took staff forever to respond. My sister and I visited one evening and my dad had an accident on the way to the bathroom. We told staff, who got him new clothes, but didn’t look twice at the mess on the floor, which meant that WE cleaned it up ourselves. If his sheets were changed, it’s because we did it for him, even when they were visibly nasty. The floors stayed sticky and grimy. He complained that they gave him no time to finish his food because they were ready to take it away and be done with him. Do NOT let them do laundry if you can help it. Even with his name on the tag, they still managed to lose both of his nice, warm blankets and several pieces of clothing. His roommate fell in the room, he rang for help, but when no one came he walked into the hall for help. He says they acted like this was the worst thing in the world, for him to walk in the hall. Communication: none. Be aware that the Medicaid help dos cost money, and lots of it! When he was admitted there, they casually mentioned that they have a rep who can help prepare the application, never once mentioning that it came with a price. A $1500 one! Had I know it would be this exorbitant amount, I certainly wouldn’t have agreed. I know that there aren’t many places to choose from but please choose somewhere else!!

I am writing this review as my father has been released from this hellscape of a facility. I waited until after his release from this place as I feared retaliation by the staff towards him. I will begin by saying that there are some individuals employed at here that do actually care about the care of the people reside in this facility. Most of them are on the day shift. but like any true house of horrors the nightmares begin when the sun goes down. My father was in this place for 4 weeks for rehabilitation for lung capacity as he has cancer and his chemo regiment has caused his lungs to have issues leading to him brought here. After his first night in the place they said that they were not able to care for him as his needs exceeded their ability and dumped him back to the hospital without informing them that they were sending him back leading to him sitting in the ER for 6 1/2 hours without being able to be re-admitted as there was no cause to admit him to the hospital. He was then transferred back to Carolina Rivers. Over the course of the next day he went without breakfast and lunch and my mother ended up having to take food to him in the evening so that he could eat. He is essentially bed bound and requires adult diapers and when he would make a bowel movement he would inform the nurse and he was frequently informed that they had "up to 2 hours to change him" or that "they were currently doing a shift change". There were multiple nights that he would hit the call button for a nurse and for over 5 hours there would be no response. This lead to him facetiming with my mother on one occasion as they waited which lead to her calling them and nobody answering her call. He was not bathed for over 3 weeks and his linens were never changed once during his stay. As a result of the treatment or shall I say the lack of treatment that he received he developed a very bad bed sore completely across his lower back and upper buttocks. Their "solution" for this was to rub diaper cream on it once or twice a day and nothing more. We spoke with the social worker and a head nurse at Carolina Rivers at least 5 times and each time the answer we got was " That's not ok, that's not how we do business here" and nothing else. It got to the point that we finally spoke with his VA doctor and his oncologist to have him removed. We also made a formally complaint to the state license board. Upon finding out that he was to be released the fun continued as Carolina Rivers called and told us that their transport vehicle was broken down and that we would have to come pick him up. We told them that was not an option as they are required to arrange for safe transportation and we could not safely bring him in the house given his current condition. We were told that we would still have to pick him up. After requesting for that in writing we were contacted within 5-10 minutes and by some miracle they were able to arrange for a transport vehicle to get him home. I am absolutely disgusted with Carolina Rivers and I will go out of me way to inform everyone I meet that may have the need for a nursing home or rehabilitation facility to stay as far away as possible from this place. I can only imagine the way that their long term patients are treated give our extremely limited exposure to their " level of care".
