We’ve been extremely happy with Brookdale after a bad experience we had at another facility. After a couple weeks at she got a very bad UTI that we recognized. They refused our request for a urine test.Said she was acting out. She ended up in hospital for 9 days after having a seizure. Upon her return they said she kept acting out and told us she had to leave. Thats when we found Brookdale. They said it sounded like normal Alzheimer’s behavior and agreed to take her. We have had zero problems since. We suspected a UTI once and they got right on it. Turns out the other place was using Alprazolam on residents to control them in one room. Brookdale residents are free to walk around where they like. The building is secure, but they can go outside on the beautiful deck with a view of the harbor. My mom does not “act out” here at Brookdale. She loves her room and especially loves the cats. For us the cats are one of the best things they have done. Another thing we love about Brookdale is the family events they have. We’ve been to great Barbecues, a tea party and even a Luau. The food is always good and it’s a great way for mom to have her family there for a meal together. One of the hardest decisions in life is how you are going to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. We tried it at her home. It was a disaster. None of us have the ability to have her at our homes, plus the simple fact she doesn’t want to be anywhere but her home. Having full time caregivers come in was just not possible. We could barely get someone 6 hours a day and even then it was sketchy. After our experience with the other facility Brookdale was a lifeline. Brookdale has been great. They told us it takes about 3 months to settle in, and they were right. We visit 2 to 4 days a week. When we take her out and she gets tired she tells us she wants to go home. She means her room at Brookdale. She feels safe there and we know she is in good hands.

Think twice about putting your vulnerable loved ones under the care of executive director, Jerry Lee. He was involved in elder abuse against my dad, breaking three laws in the process. Because he was just an interim director for the facility my dad was in, they quietly just removed him and allowed him to continue in the Harbor Bay facility. If your parent has dementia, put them somewhere they will be cared for. It might not be here. And to their reply below: I did call the 877 number and talked to the district director and regional director. The district director, Jim Coumbs, had absolutely NO compassion for my dad and was just covering their errors in staffing. So, don't expect any help from corporate when you need it.

My husband has been living at Brookdale Harbor Bay for over a year now. This is a specialized memory care facility (there is another Brookdale in Gig Harbor which is assisted living - two different facilities). I have been very happy with the care he has received here. I spend time there almost every day, and I am very impressed with the caring staff and the concern for both the resident and the family members who are dealing with the devastating disease of dementia. I read the earlier review, which appears to be for the Brookdale Assisted Living, not Brookdale Harbor Bay. Brookdale Harbor Bay has an excellent reputation in the community, and I would recommend it as a possibility to explore if you are looking for Alzheimers/dementia care for a loved one.
