I am deeply disappointed by my experience with Brio Home Health, specifically with the administrator/DON, Liz. I want to be clear that I fully support communication between home health staff and my loved one’s medical providers when there are legitimate safety concerns. However, the way concerns were communicated in our situation was accusatory, lacked compassion, and ultimately led us to discontinue services. We were contacted by my loved one’s provider’s office and informed that concerns had been reported regarding fluid intake, with the message that care would be discontinued if changes were not made. Rather than receiving a direct, respectful conversation from Brio’s administration to discuss the situation and gather more information, we were left feeling judged and threatened. A simple phone call expressing concern and asking for clarification could have made all the difference. When I reached out to discuss the matter, I was met with what I felt was a dismissive and disrespectful tone, along with a complete lack of empathy for our family’s circumstances. For the past five years, I have been the primary caregiver for my loved one with advanced vascular dementia. I left my career to care for her full-time while also raising two children under the age of four. Every day, I work tirelessly to keep my loved one safe, comfortable, and out of memory care for as long as possible. Caregivers are already carrying an enormous emotional burden, and the last thing families need is to be treated with disrespect when they are doing everything they can. Sometimes it’s not just what is said, but how it is said. Had these concerns been addressed with compassion, respect, and a willingness to understand our situation, we likely would have continued services with Brio. Unfortunately, that was not our experience.
