This facility assessed and accepted my friend’s mother yesterday, and was made fully aware that she sundowned and was having issues with being combative (which is not uncommon with dementia patients.) My friend was assured this was not uncommon and that the facility could handle it and had procedures in place. The poor mom was there LESS THAN 24 HOURS. The facility was having issues with her, and clearly did not want to take the time to deal with her patiently. They wanted to send her to the hospital to get her medicated as a first option, which is not appropriate for dementia patients. Biting can absolutely occur in dementia, particularly when someone feels cornered, restrained, frightened, or doesn’t understand why someone is touching them. It doesn’t automatically mean that the person belongs in a psychiatric hospital!!! Rather than reaching out to the family, the facility called the POLICE today on this poor, confused lady in her 80s with dementia after she was there literally less than 24 hours!!! Do NOT place your family here. This was traumatic for the mom and for my friend, and violates state regulations around involuntary discharge. She has also requested all kinds of records and policies and they have provided NOTHING.<br><br>Edit to respond: this response from Alto is completely false.
