After my mom underwent major brain surgery at UCSF, our family was very nervous about choosing a rehabilitation facility due to prior negative experiences elsewhere. Thankfully, Tampico completely changed our perspective. From the moment we walked in, the facility felt clean, welcoming, and genuinely caring. The staff consistently treated my mom with kindness, dignity, and patience during a very vulnerable time in her recovery. Her therapy team and caregivers were wonderful, especially Helen, Emiliano, and Aarti, who made such a lasting impact on both my mom and our family. The PT and OT teams encouraged her every step of the way, and we watched her go from not being able to sit up independently to becoming strong enough to transfer into intensive rehab at John Muir. What stood out most was how attentive and compassionate everyone was. We never felt like my mom was “just another patient.” The staff truly cared, and it showed daily. We are incredibly grateful to the entire Tampico team and would absolutely recommend this facility to families looking for quality rehabilitation care in Walnut Creek.

A System That Profits From Neglect — A Warning to Families For over five years, my friend devoted himself to helping disabled and homeless veterans obtain critical benefits. At the same time, he battled severe depression fueled by an abusive relationship that eventually left him homeless. Despite efforts to stabilize his life, he was ultimately hospitalized on the brink of death. I fought to keep him alive. After a long recovery, he was discharged to Concord Post Acute. Believing he would receive proper care, I arranged for regular visits and support. That trust was misplaced. Without warning, I was told he had been hospitalized again and that hospice should be considered. Only then did I learn the facility had failed to inform anyone that he had stopped eating. This was not a minor oversight—it was a life-threatening failure of basic care and communication. At John Muir Medical Center, a dedicated physician intervened and saved his life. Refusing to send him back, I had him discharged to Tampico Healthcare. I stayed actively involved, visiting often and encouraging him to eat. For a time, he improved. Then it happened again. I was informed he had not eaten for nearly two weeks. Two weeks. This reflects systemic failure, not an isolated mistake. During that hospitalization, I was told by a physician, in substance, that depression would not be treated and he should be allowed to die. After returning to Tampico Healthcare, staff were repeatedly warned he was having breathing problems. The Director of Nursing was notified multiple times. No meaningful action was taken. Instead, his condition worsened until he was rushed to the emergency room again—followed by renewed pressure to place him on hospice, not because all care options were exhausted, but because the system had failed him. What Families Should Know This experience reflects a broader issue in post-acute care. In some facilities, financial priorities appear to outweigh patient care. Vulnerable patients—especially those who are depressed, nonverbal, or medically fragile—can be reduced to minimal interaction: Food trays delivered with no monitoring of intake Little to no meaningful engagement Delayed or ignored responses to serious symptoms The Reality Neglect is not always obvious. Sometimes it is silence: No call when a patient stops eating No response to repeated warnings No urgency until it becomes an emergency Final Thought Despite these failures, these facilities continue to demand full payment. If you are placing a loved one in a post-acute facility, do not rely on assurances. Ask questions. Demand accountability. Visit often. What I witnessed at Concord Post Acute and Tampico Healthcare is not just disappointing—it is dangerous.

I want to express my utmost gratitude to the Tampico Healthcare Center team, especially Vanti, Rommel, Geraldine Rona, Riza - the entire activity team. They took exceptional care of my grandmother and I could not be more thankful for the kindness, patience, and compassion they showed her every single day. It meant so much to our family to know she was surrounded by people who treated her with such warmth during her final few months. I cannot recommend this team enough. THANK YOU!

This was the worst facility I ever brought my mom to. Came to visit her she was on the floor and soiled . No staff in sight I walked all over and saw people coming from the break room . Asked someone named Shasa for help, who was no help and nobody was responding. No help whatsoever , I wouldn’t want no one to bring their family here. So much discrimination against my mom. Just because she doesn’t speak English . No help what’s so ever . But I brought her to a better facility. Anything’s better than Tampico.
