I would not recommend this convalescent hospital to families caring for loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. My father stayed at this facility for approximately one month, and during that time it became clear that the staff lacked sufficient training and experience in managing patients with dementia-related behaviors, particularly sundown syndrome. On one occasion, I received a phone call at 1:00 a.m. asking me to come to the facility because my father was awake, talking, and bothering the nursing staff. About two weeks later, I received another call at 5:00 a.m. with the same request. During that call, I was told that if I did not come in, they would transfer my father to another facility. As a family member, I understand that caring for dementia patients can be challenging, but these behaviors are common symptoms of the disease and should be expected in a facility that accepts patients with dementia and Alzheimer's. It was concerning to feel pressured to come in during the middle of the night because the staff could not adequately manage his condition. My disappointment continued after my father's discharge. The discharge coordinator, Michelle Wang, informed us that she would submit the paperwork to begin the IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services) application process on our behalf and told us we should receive documentation within one to one-and-a-half weeks. After 1.5 weeks passed without receiving anything, I contacted her and was told she would look into it. When another 1.5 weeks went by with no update, I personally visited the IHSS office to check on the status of my father's application. To my shock, I was informed that no application had ever been started. As a result, we lost three valuable weeks waiting for a process that had never been initiated. Had we been told the truth from the beginning, I could have submitted the application myself and avoided the delay. Families caring for elderly loved ones already have enough stress without being given inaccurate information that affects important support services. Overall, my experience was extremely disappointing. The facility demonstrated a lack of preparedness for dementia patients and failed to follow through on important discharge-related responsibilities. I hope management takes steps to improve staff training and communication so that other families do not experience similar issues.

I am a retired RN and help oversee my older brother’s care from San Diego. Unlike our experience at a previous SNF, the care, including OT and PT, that he received at Monterey Park was incredible. He received exceptional care. My brother frequently told me he loved it there and that each, and every person worked extremely hard and showed dedication to their job. He said there was an air of positivity from every staff member. They came to his room frequently to ensure all needs were being met. They always directed my calls to the correct person, whether it be regarding physical therapy, the RN, or discharge planner. And each person was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Monterey Park will be our first choice should he ever need skilled nursing care again in the future! Thank you to everyone for taking such great care of my brother!
