In my opinion, Greenfield Care Center crossed the line from negligence into potentially unlawful behavior—and my father received a dangerous discharge, not a safe one. Administrator Hilda Carrera attempted to pressure me into private pay twice during active Medicare appeals. She even handed me a bill for $11,100 with a credit card form attached, and only after I objected did she call it an “estimate.” The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) investigated Greenfield three separate times during my father’s short stay, including after discharge. In my opinion, social worker Vanessa played a central role in this misconduct. She ignored discharge-planning emails for over a month, deflected responsibility (even blaming Livanta), and failed to initiate a proper discharge plan when Medicare coverage was at risk as early as June 4. I also believe she made sure my father was sent to the wrong type of specialist after discharge, which I feel was unsafe. When I involved Adult Protective Services, the Ombudsman, and even the police, the misconduct continued. An officer taking my statement was told—falsely, in my opinion—that my father could not be released because we “owed payment.” From what I understand, Medicare-certified facilities cannot detain patients over payment disputes during or after appeals. Even after we won the appeal, Greenfield stalled discharge, ignored emails, and dragged their feet. They also pushed a false “plateau” narrative to justify ending rehab. A separate physician confirmed my dad had not plateaued, yet they continued this story and refused to identify the physician they claimed made the decision. In my opinion, Hilda and Vanessa worked together to use deception, delay tactics, and obstruction of medical care to try to force private pay. To me, their actions came across as cruel, retaliatory, and in total disregard of patient rights and safety. The only time Vanessa ever acted was when CDPH intervened. I personally see both Hilda and Vanessa as fake, manipulative, and, frankly, evil in how they treated my family. We didn’t want a fight—we wanted a safe, legal discharge. Instead, we were met with lies, manipulation, and, in my opinion, a discharge so unsafe it put my father’s life at risk. If you are considering this facility, proceed with extreme caution. And if you’ve experienced similar mistreatment, I encourage you to speak up. No family should have to go through this.
