Just got short of help, they put me in a room with someone who has a cold and steady coughing I didn't come here to get sick. My help button has been ringing for 1hr and 45minutes and nobody yet . Hoping my insurance will move me somewhere else very soon. How can you bring cold lunch fish and tator tots at that, no salt or sugar for the the tea and melted ice cream and i'm not on a sugar free diet. This is ridiculous.😔😪😤

My mother was a resident at Athens Health & Rehab for less than two months, and our experience was extremely disappointing and concerning. She was not provided adequate hospital follow-up care. I repeatedly had to advocate for her and personally take her to outside doctor appointments to ensure she received proper medical attention. The facility doctor dismissed her complaints about swelling, which later turned out to be a serious kidney issue. Because I intervened and took her to a physician myself, she was ultimately found to need dialysis. We ended up finding out too late and within days she passed from her lungs filling with fluid causing respiratory distress. Staffing was also concerning. During the day, there was only one RN assigned to her area. She was so busy that it was hard to speak with her about my mothers health concerns and when I did get to speak with her, there was never any follow-up. At night only LPNs and CNAs were present. There did not appear to be sufficient clinical oversight, especially for residents with complex medical needs. Additional issues included: -Staff are not concerned about patients health concerns; only making sure their check list is checked off for the day. -I requested a follow up from the provider on staff regarding certain concerns and that was never provided. -Bathing was missed frequently. -Laundry frequently lost despite being labeled. -Being given empty oxygen tanks when transporting her to appointments. -Failure to follow proper check-in and check-out protocols. -An administrator who never answered phone calls or returned emails when reached out to regarding patient concerns. Most heartbreaking of all was what happened shortly before my mother passed away. She was found in her room gasping for air, visibly struggling to breathe and in obvious respiratory distress. Instead of an immediate and coordinated emergency response, there was confusion and delay. It took approximately nine minutes for staff to call 911. This timeline is not an estimate — it is documented in records from Athens Health & Rehab medical records as well as Athens-Limestone EMS call record. In a life-threatening emergency where someone cannot breathe, nine minutes is an eternity. During that time, there did not appear to be a clear, urgent, or well-coordinated response. When EMS arrived, the front entrance of the facility was locked and no staff member was present to let them in. Paramedics had to call the facility to gain access, causing yet another delay in critical care which from documents records caused another 3 minute delay. A nursing facility caring for medically vulnerable residents should have established emergency protocols that are immediate, organized, and efficient. Every second matters in a respiratory emergency. The documented delay and lack of preparedness in those final moments is devastating and deeply concerning. Patients deserve to be the first priority. They deserve attentive care, proper medical follow-up, and dignity. Unfortunately, that was not our experience here. I strongly urge families to thoroughly research and carefully consider other options. This facility does not have proper protocols in place for emergencies, nor sufficient qualified staff on hand to ensure residents receive the care they need and deserve.

Serving Patients Breakfast on a Saturday for Supper is a joke. Biscuit, One small sausage patty and cold grits. Get for real. I have had to bring my love one food from the outside two to three times a day for now going on her fourth week. The person running this place will be reported. I've seen people in prison get better food.

First, how I wish there was an option for zero stars. It's taken me months to write this review, mainly because the simple act of looking this place up and seeing the name absolutely sickens me. Our experience while my mother was in their care was the single worst thing I've gone through in my life. I'm not sure I will ever be able to forgive myself for trusting the staff in the long-term care facility. I will say that the care at the Rehab facility was fine, actually really good, but when my mothers insurance required a transfer to the long-term care facility, we had an entirely different experience. Please, I beg of you, please take your time and understand exactly what you're getting into before you allow your loved one to go into the long-term care facility at Athens Health and Rehabilitation. Go visit, unannounced if they will let you in. Insist on going into the long-term care facility. Pay attention to what you see and ask a lot of questions. I would encourage you to ask challenging questions of the staff, particularly the managers who work hands-on with the residents. Please pay attention to what you see and hear, and take nothing for granted. If you do end up allowing your loved one to enter this place, please visit daily and be super involved. Insist daily on seeing your loved ones' records. Insist on getting a printout of EXACTLY what meds and treatments were given that day. Be nice to the staff and get to know them, try to help with the care of your loved one. Do this every single day. If something seems off, please trust your gut. My family did all of the above, except for insisting on printouts of the meds given each day. I would do almost anything to be able to go back in time and do this. People typically go to places like this when they are at the end of their lives. I get that. But no one should have to go through what we watched my mother go through while we watched in horror, desperately trying to figure out why she digressed so rapidly and how to help her when she was suddenly unable to communicate. We finally got answers after I finally insisted on calling 911 and took her to the hospital. Like I said, I’m not sure I will ever be able to forgive myself. I know this is such a challenging time of life and everyone has different situations. I also realize what a tough job it is to work in this type of environment. Please just take the time to understand what long-term care does and what it does not do and stay on top of your loved ones care.

We have used Athens Rehab for my Dad after his last 2 surgeries. They have very caring and comprehensive during both of his recoveries. Lory and her team were so helpful negotiating admission and the insurance quagmire. They made a difficult situation and his transition from the hospital as seamless as possible. The nurses and PT staff took exceptional care of Dad and worked very had to make sure he was comfortable and we were well informed of his progress. I highly recommend the team at Athens Rehabilitation, and thank them so much for their caring and compassion towards my dad and us all.
