My mother has lived in the assisted living apartments about 6 months. Her health and happiness have improved 10 fold! It was the best decision ever.
1. Every time I call her, a staff member knocks on the door to let her know a meal is beginning or an activity is happening. They actively make sure she can stay engaged if she wants. My mom has dementia, so this is the only way she’d know to participate. The participation is key to her quality of life and longevity.
2. My daughter spent the night with her and our family is pretty good at stopping by to see her.
Most of the time she is hanging out with friends somewhere. We have always witnessed Disney level attitudes by the staff. They are cheerful and attentive. I’ve never seen a cell phone in a hand, dismissiveness or neglect. It’s exactly what you dream of.
I love that staff members are laughing and having fun with each other as much as the residents. This is the energy that heals! I can’t say enough about the culture they have created for their team. Seriously smart management.
3. It’s clean. Like, really clean. Lots of people moving all about and I never saw a vacuum. It’s that Disney magic again. I haven’t figured out how they do it and I’ve stayed in the theater more than once watching movies with them until late.
4. Have a meal there. It’s good. Especially lunch. They have lots of choices to pick from. It’s kinda hard to choose. I haven’t met any resident who cooks anything in their room. My mom literally uses her freezer to store Drumsticks- her vice- and other than that the whole fridge is empty. I don’t know why we even brought over her dinner wear.
5. On another note, she has a bunch of friends, all of whom have dementia. It works! When the loop exhausts me, they are unaffected. It was an unexpected bonus.
6. My mother’s health has improved to the point where doctors only want to see her once a year. Every marker has stopped declining since she moved in. She actually realized she’ll probably live into her 90s so this week she went and asked for a bigger apartment!

My husband and I have both decided we’d move to Texas and live in Arabella over anything Palm Beach has to offer.
I was truly scared, putting her in a facility, and now I regret everything we did to avoid it.

I hope this helps others feel confident about their choice.
