My Aunt is here and I am here only living relative she has living that is in constant contact with. My Aunt has dementia and she is also mentally handicapped. The nursing home tells me one thing but does another. They are in control of her finances. They call me to go over her care plan but that plan is never done. We just had an incident with her choking and she had to be resuscitated and hospitalized. She gets choked easily and was supposed to be on soft foods, so how does one get choked on a chicken bone. The woman is clearly not of sound mind and the hospital knows this but the nursing home is telling me she can make her own decisions. Because I am a niece I can't do anything. I need help and do not know what to do or if I can do anything to be over her health care choices. One time I visited and her clothes was laying in the bottom of her closet (not folded ). I have sent packages to her with new clothes and house shoes & jewelry but when she calls me and tells me her stuff is missing. You ask staff and they have no idea. I do think this nursing home is a lower class home taking advantage of it's residents or not really caring about the residents daily activities and making sure other residents aren't taking advantage of my aunt.
