About Us

For over 100 years, the Sarah Daft Home has been committed to providing affordable, high quality care in a homelike setting. Our 24-hour community is staffed with compassionate, skilled professionals devoted to meeting the individual needs of each resident.

Sarah Daft Home is one of the oldest nonprofit assisted care facilities in the country.  In 1904, Sarah Ann Daft envisioned “a place where lonesome old people can go to live out their lives without worry where the next meal is coming from, or where they are going to get the winter’s coal or necessary clothing.”

In 1911, Jennie Anderson Froiseth, a community activist, took this idea and ran with it. After a long, tough journey, the doors to the Sarah Daft Home opened in 1914. Sarah Daft’s dream still resonates in the community today, to help those in need live a happy and healthy life.

Located in the Salt Lake East Side Historic District, the beautiful Colonial Revival 1913 building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Sarah Daft Home is positioned on a lovely hillside overlooking the valley—near the University of Utah, downtown, senior centers, shops and many healthcare providers.

The Sarah Daft Home remains one of the oldest nonprofit, continuously-operated assisted living facilities in the western United States. True to its original mission, “to provide affordable quality care in a homelike setting,” it’s still serving those whom Sarah Ann Daft had hoped to help more than 100 years ago.

Assisted Living Facility

All residents enjoy an inclusive, inviting environment with home-cooked meals, stimulating activities and many opportunities to come together and socialize. The Sarah Daft Home is a place where everyone is treated with respect and made to feel part of an engaging community, with:

•    Three, nutritious home-cooked meals
•    Medication assistance
•    Bathing assistance
•    Morning and afternoon beverage cart
•    Weekly housekeeping services
•    Weekly laundry service and linen change
•    Transportation and escort to medical appointments

Home-like, not hospital-like

The Sarah Daft Home is a community; a place where people come to LIVE.  Unlike other corporate facilities, we are small enough to encourage an actively-engaged life experience, with:

•    Spacious living areas
•    Utilities, upgraded cable TV and wireless internet
•    Personal service alarm systems in all apartments
•    Personal telephones and service in every apartment
•    Peaceful grounds, gardens and large covered deck
•    Resident “household” engagements
•    Exercise and yoga programs
•    Hair salon and Podiatry services available
•    Field trips: shopping, movies, senior centers, restaurants, community events

Our doors are always open – we’re family

Everything we do here at the Sarah Daft Home, we do with a sense of togetherness. We come together for meals, activities, and friendship. The community of staff and residents at Sarah Daft work together to provide a wonderful environment where residents will thrive, not decline. Everyone works together to give one another a role and a purpose.

Because we’re a small home, with a small staff, we’re able to operate in ways that are more human; less corporate. We believe that we have the best staff because each human who works here is motivated by compassion, not money.

Creating a culture of whole health

Mental health improves when given purpose. We find many residents go from being room-bound and quiet to active and social when given an opportunity to contribute.

Residents are invited to “share” in the household duties, such as:

•    Arranging the flowers, delivered weekly
•    Setting the tables
•    Folding towels
•    Gardening
•    Passing out mail

Residents also take great pride in contributing to the community, through shared activities, events and charities, such as:

•    Creating new resident kits for area homeless
•    Weekly music time with University of Utah students
•    Easter egg hunt with the local Baptist church
•    Promoting reading through story time with area children
