Saint Luke’s Bishop Spencer Place opened its doors on December 6, 1995, to a handful of courageous residents who braved the winter snow to move into the newly-constructed Madison independent living building. These first residents were given a firm promise: Bishop Spencer Place would provide them with premier retirement living, a faith-based and family-oriented environment and a unique blend of service-rich hospitality, plus health and pastoral care for the duration of their lives.

More than 20 years later, Bishop Spencer Place has grown – including the opening of the Jefferson building, which added 54 independent living apartment homes – and has developed into the warm community more than 135 residents call home. However, with all the changes that occur over a 20-year period, the promise given to the first residents remains firmly in place today – unchanged and a critical part of the Bishop Spencer Place mission.

Saint Luke’s Bishop Spencer Place is affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri (the Diocese). The Diocese received two gifts in 1965 that helped fund the creation of Bishop Spencer Place. Our community is named after Robert Nelson Spencer, who was the Bishop of the Diocese from 1930 to 1950.

or short-term rehabilitation or long-term skilled nursing, our multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive care in York Place Skilled Nursing & Rehab at Bishop Spencer Place focuses on medical needs, as well as emotional, spiritual and social needs. We embrace this unique approach of blending quality care with resident enrichment provided by a compassionate, highly engaged staff. Our staff-to-resident ratios are significantly higher than both the Missouri and national averages. In fact, we have more than double the Missouri average of licensed nurse staffing hours per resident each day.

We specialize in short-term rehabilitation, discharge planning and returning people to their home. In fact, our return-to-home success rate and hospital readmission rate both consistently trend better than the national average.
