Independent Living Options for Seniors

What are the benefits of Independent Living Communities for Seniors?

For many seniors, staying independent is of utmost importance. Some feel that if they rely on others to do everything for them, that they will cease to “exist”. Others don’t need any or much help, and may want to stay close to friends and family. For those seniors, there are many independent living options available:

Active Adult Communities like the Del Webbs and Robson Resorts are master planned retirement communities with homes for sale. Most offer a clubhouse where a variety of activities are offered. Services such as landscaping, maintenance & housekeeping are usually offered as well.

Senior Apartments are independent living units with an age requirement. Meals are usually not provided, but most have a clubhouse where groups meet for activities.

Retirement Communities offer independent living with amenities such as meals, transportation and activities included in the monthly fee.

A CCRC or continuing care retirement community offers independent living, assisted living and nursing care in a single setting. You can start on the independent level and progress as need be, staying on one campus. These communities normally require an entry fee and offer a living unit, meals, and health care up to the nursing level.

Assisted Living Options for Seniors

What is Assisted Living Care?

Assisted living is defined as a combining of housing, personalized supportive services and health care designed to meet the individual needs of persons who need help with the activities of daily living, but do not need the skilled medical care provided in a nursing home.

Assisted living communities are licensed as and called many different things including: board & care (B&Cs) and residential care homes or facilities (RCFEs), personal care homes (PCH), adult foster care, homes for the aged, adult family or group homes (AFH), and more.

What is the Average Cost of Residence in an Assisted Living Facility?

The average cost of an assisted living facility in the US last year was $4,000 each month according to a study done by Genworth. Averages do vary by city and state, seniors looking for residence in Boston, MA, are more likely to see averages of $4,500-$5,000 a month compared to monthly costs of $2,500-$3,000 in southern locations like Atlanta, Georgia. Assisted living is mainly private pay, meaning it is paid for by the individual or long-term care insurance.

If a senior in your life needs assistance with daily living, we can help you find a community or home that fits your needs. From large elegant, amenity-laden communities offering a continuum of care, to assisted living offered in residential homes, we have all licensed options listed here. Just choose the area you are interested in to find an assisted living option that fits your needs.

Find Respite Care

What is Respite Care for Seniors?

Respite care is short term care for a senior. Whether in a community or at home, care is provided on a temporary basis while a caretaker is on vacation or indisposed due to surgery or illness.

Respite care can be a life saver for caregivers needing a break from the physical and mental demands and the stress of care giving! Caregivers can rest knowing that their loved one is well taken care of. This is also a great option if you and your loved one are considering full-time help or a move. This is a great way to “test the waters”. Per Wikipedia, respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and well being, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. An outcome based evaluation pilot study shows that respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages.

As a caregiver, with the financial resources, respite care is a highly recommended way to get a mental and physical break from the rigors of taking care of a loved one. You should not feel guilty about needing a break, as long as you are confident in the quality of the respite care provider.

Several nursing homes, assisted living communities, home care providers, and hospitals offer respite care, but not all, so check with a provider (and their listing) for availability, offers and fees. Some also consider adult day care a type of respite care since care is offered during a specific time period on certain days. Some providers offer this service as a way to bring in clients full-time. Let them know if you will be considering more care or a move in the future, as an assisted living or personal care provider may be able to make the visit a “trial”, and cut fees. Some providers do not “normally” offer short-term stays, but they may do so in a bad economy. It’s worth asking!

Memory Care for Seniors

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Options in the US for Seniors

Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss can be tragic, but fortunately there are dementia and memory care communities out there that can offer comfort, professional help and supportive services, that can greatly increase the quality of life. As different stages of Dementia and Alzheimer’s require different services, it’s important to know what kind of facility will be right for you or your loved one.

Local Memory Care InformationAt many Alzheimer’s care facilities you are given plenty of freedom to go about daily activities. Comfort and care are important at this stage. Alzheimer’s facilities are ideally suited for those who do not need skilled medical care found in a nursing home, but might require some assistance with daily activities. This allows for independence. Assisted living communities can vary in size and amenities, but it is important to ensure that dementia care is available.

The New LifeStyles Story

While looking for care in the Dallas area for his mother, Les Blaser realized there weren’t any reliable sources of information on senior housing available. He then started a small newsletter for Dallas area hospitals listing the nursing homes in the Dallas area. The idea blossomed into the first New LifeStyles guide, published in 1987 for Dallas, TX. Les and his wife Renee, then started working on other Texas area guides including Ft. Worth, then on to Southern California. Thirty years later, we publish 24 guides for metropolitan areas in the U.S.

New LifeStyles guides are complimentary to the public and distributors. They can be ordered at www.NewLifestyles.com or by calling 800-869-9549.

New LifeStyles Online went live in 1995 as one of the first senior housing sites on the internet, another vision of Les Blaser. It is designed for seniors, their families and friends, social workers, case managers, physicians, and anyone else interested in searching one place for nationwide senior living options. New LifeStyles Online houses a database of all state licensed senior communities, home health & hospice agencies nationwide, plus other non-licensed communities and senior products & services. You can view basic information on these companies, contact them through e-mail forms, get more information on them by linking to their sites, take an online tour of communities, download a brochure and more!
