Creating Safe, Healthy and Vibrant Communities
Bethel New Life is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Chicago, Illinois. Formed by a small Lutheran church on the West Side of Chicago in response to the devastation and disinvestment that followed the civil rights riots of the late 1960s,
Bethel New Life has been in the business of creating social impact and community change for more than four decades.
Bethel New Life’s mission is to realize God’s vision of a restored society by empowering individuals, strengthening families, and building west side neighborhoods through community-driven, solution-oriented, and value-centered approaches.
“If you put an end to oppression, to every gesture of contempt, and to every evil word; if you give food to the hungry and satisfy those who are in need, then the darkness around you will turn to the brightness of noon. And I will always guide you and satisfy you with good things. I will keep you strong and well. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring of water that never goes dry. Your people will rebuild what has long been in ruins, building again on the old foundations. You will be known as the people who rebuilt the walls, who restored the ruined houses.”
Creativity in finding solutions to community challenges. Making it happen by thinking out side of the box. We will act out our faith through our work.
This core value comes first for a reason. Without integrity, we will not have the impact that we desire. We take this very seriously. We will extend grace when it comes to mistakes and errors, giving people a chance to grow and improve in their jobs. We are not as tolerant of violations in this area. We need to know we can trust our coworkers without question.
We are constantly redefining our goals, expectations, boundaries, and potential. Our team’s talents and performance vary from person to person. That is normal. We simply believe that regardless of your talent or performance today, you should want to be better tomorrow. We want teammates that are constantly striving to learn and grow, improving every day!
We strive to create an atmosphere that inspires and enables people to reach their full potential. As an organization, we want to meet our employees where they are as they strive for excellence. Our goal is to provide the resources and inspiration required to “move” them forward on their path. Sometimes this means they advance within our organization and sometimes it means they move on to other opportunities. Either way, we want to help!
We provide the opportunity for all to know God and make Him known. No one who works in our organization is required to believe what we believe. However, we make it clear early on that our Creator is the owner of our organization. Therefore, all that we do centers around Him. This includes many efforts to sow seeds of faith all around through various efforts. We will not force anyone to believe, but they will certainly have opportunities to hear.
We use our talents and treasures to make a difference in those who need it most. We believe we are part of the community in which we work and therefore have the responsibility to give back to that community. Whether through community service, programming or providing safe spaces for programs, we are going to take the time and energy to give to those who need it.
The Path Ahead – Our 2020 Vision
West Side residents have a life expectancy of 69 years, which is 16 years less than residents of the Loop, just a 15-minute train ride away. Bethel New Life has a vision that will close the gap for our Community of Elders and the communities we serve by standing up the following initiatives to create healthcare career opportunities, provide access to fresh produce, create learning opportunities around sustainability for our children, create affordable space for local nonprofits and provide housing opportunities for veterans that include supportive services.
Who We Are
Meet Sharif Walker

Under Sharif’s leadership, Bethel will continue its safe and affordable senior and supportive housing programming, while providing affordable office lease options for community businesses and popular community event space rentals. Sharif’s leadership philosophy, coupled with expertise in vision casting, fundraising, partnership development and stewardships will advance Bethel’s Path Forward Plan, including goals to create healthcare career opportunities for local youth and families, provide access to fresh produce, create learning opportunities around sustainability for our children, leverage affordable space for local nonprofits and small business, and provide housing opportunities for veterans that include supportive services.

Ansell, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President for Community Health Equity, Rush University Medical Center and Associate Provost for Community Affairs, Rush University. “Sharif is the right leader to have on board to connect Bethel services programs and its community to the momentum on the West Side and the growing coalition’s work to improve the life expectancy of West Side residents.”

Supportive Living at Beth-Anne Place
Beth-Anne Place is an affordable and supportive living community that provides a variety of specialized services assisting residents to be as independent as they can be for as long as they can be. Bethel opened the 85-unit apartment building in January 2003 for seniors who can no longer safely maintain themselves in their own home but do not require the level of services found in a nursing home.
Beth-Anne Place provides comfortable 1-bedroom and studio apartments, three meals daily in a spacious dining room, weekly housekeeping and laundry services, 24-hour certified nursing assistance, and a full activity program orchestrated by our full time activity director. Beth-Anne Place has nurses on staff and a dietary manager to ensure a holistic level of care for senior residents. All of our services are included in the monthly fee — there is never any added charge for additional care.
Our goal is to promote the dignity and well-being of the residents we serve.
Welcome to Beth-Anne Place and welcome home.
Our certified and professionally trained staff is present in the building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your safety and well-being. Our nursing staff consists of a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and certified nursing assistants. Our Nursing Supervisor works with residents individually to create a customized care plan, which is followed by all staff. Our staff will be happy to assist with medications. We also assist with all activities of daily living that are needed, including showering, dressing, ambulating and incontinence care, all at no extra cost. Residents receive an assessment upon admission into Beth-Anne Place and again annually. We provide daily wellness checks and extra services in times of need.
Our residents enjoy three daily meals prepared in our kitchen. Each day our residents have choices of entrées, side dishes, and desserts that allow them to make choices recommended by their physician or personal taste. A dietician makes timely visits and is available for consultation. Under the weather? We will bring your meals to you in times of illness. ACTIVITIES & RECREATION
Our activities and recreation program seeks to meet the multidimensional needs of our seniors. Our community has on-site activities as well as routine outings for our residents. Each resident has the opportunity to participate in the scheduling of events and ideas and lead them if they desire. We offer a varied selection of recreational activities including exercise, trips, group events, and crafts. Join us for a game of pool or cards. Our recreational activities are supplemented by Educational programs covering senior issues and wellness.
Our housekeeping staff clean residential units and provide laundry service weekly, or more often as needed – and both services are included in the rent. Residents have the option of maintaining their own unit and doing their own laundry if they choose.
Our rent is affordable, determined by a sliding scale based on income. Residents have control of their finances. Each month residents receive a billing statement that gives them the ability to maintain their independence through their own money management. Residents on a fixed income always keep a monthly personal allowance to provide for personal expenses.
Our dedicated staff is supplemented by the addition of onsite security staff in the evening hours providing 24-hour peace of mind. All staff members go through rigorous training and background checks before being trusted with the care of our residents. All visitors to our building are checked in at our reception area. Our hallways are monitored by camera for the safety of our residents. Every apartment features an emergency call system that is monitored 24 hours a day and provides peace of mind for each resident’s well being.
