Assisted Living

The Assisted Living Federation of America gives us the best definition of Assisted Living Facilities: “Assisted living is a long-term care option that combines housing, support services and health care, as needed. Assisted living is designed for individuals who require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation. Some residents may have memory disorders including Alzheimer’s, or they may need help with mobility, incontinence or other challenges.”

Independent Living

Independent retirement living communities feature apartment living for seniors who do not require specialized care. Seniors are welcome to use third-party home health care providers of their choice. Typically, the communities offer weekly housekeeping, three meals a day in a restaurant-style setting, local transportation and regularly scheduled social activities in one all-inclusive, monthly rent.

Residential Care Homes

Residential care homes provide personalized services to small groups of seniors. They also go under the names board and care homes, as well as adult family homes. These homes often provide meal service, lodging, and support pertaining to basic living activities. These homes usually provide less care than most types of assisted living communities, but might be preferred because of the more home-like atmosphere.

Home Care

Home care allows seniors to receive in-home assistance based on frequency and level of needs, and may include daily activities such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping, meals and medication reminders. Home care is welcome in private homes and independent retirement living communities, but may be restricted in communities providing a higher level of care.
